The UK's Labour Government yesterday have launched a consultation on the taxation of remote gambling operators, with James Murray the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury stating:

"The three-tax system needs to adapt to reflect the dynamic and expanding nature of the sector. The time has come to consider moving to a single tax for UK-facing remote gambling."

There are fears within the industry that streamlining the taxation to one single tax will also further increase the amount UK facing remote operators will have to pay HMRC.

Gambling appears to be the low hanging fruit that the UK government can keep going back to. They are unlikely to get lots of criticism for taxing gamblers and are unlikely to lose support from voters for targeting this industry. However, there are plenty of other knock-on effects from continuing to raid this sector for money. Companies will go offshore (most already have), gamblers will turn to crypto and unlicensed, and before long there will be no revenues to tax.

So what seems like a no-brainer is very much turning into a very bad idea.

It boggles the mind how Starmer and Reeves's Labour have fumbled the ball this badly. They finally get into power and it's "actually let's just keep doing what the Conservatives were doing lol".

From my American vantage point anyway. All this superfluous talk about three-tax systems and """dynamic sectors""" reads to me as "changing things is hard, let's just magically generate more revenue by taxing casinos moar lol".

Remote/online gambling is definitely nosediving. Soon (5 years plus) the industry may not even exist. The have made so many changes - and some for the good of the industry and players that were long overdo - that leads many to thinking that there will be very few online companies left soon
