This is my own 2cents and not posted in my role as a staff member. But this thread is in the attic and to be honest it is ( The thread title ) actually accurate IMO.

But then, I live only 40 miles away from Sailsbury where Putin sent two FSB agents four years ago, armed with the nerve agent Novichok.

Interesting piece on how war with Russia was averted when JFK spoke with Khruschchev in '62, and how hard- fought diplomacy goes a long way.

Granted, different time, different scenario, but principles remain the same. So whilst there is no one of JFK's calibre around, the U.S has a President that chews his own ear, and all diplomatic conferences I've recently witnessed involve delegates walking out in protest......every time.

All I'm seeing is war rhetoric and escalation, when really, as has been proven in the past, you give the aggressor enough room to back down without losing face, there's a good chance they might. I think even the likes of Putin can be reined in with the right diplomacy, even at this juncture.

141 yes ONE HUNDRED and FORTY ONE members of the UN voted to condemn Russia's invasion ( Yes an INVASION not a 'special operation ) of Ukraine. Out of 193 countries that voted.

Don't worry though, Putin is in good company, the likes of Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea and Syria sided with them

Russia's UN Slug is now currently spreading disinformation at the UN alleging that they have uncovered biological labs in Ukraine which have been directly funded by the US. You couldn't make this shit up. Well you could, Putin's Russia has past form for this....

I'm not Russian or Ukrainian, but I can write and speak Russian fluently and understand Ukrainian. I've joined a few Ukrainian Telegram channels where people share and discuss various topics on this war thing. I also follow similar Russian channels on Telegram and regularly watch the news in both languages via VPN because some information is inaccessible in both countries if you try to watch it through a regular connection.

Note I am not on anyone's side. So what I can say is that they are both full of shit, especially Ukraine with their fake/constructed videos and images all over the internet, but even worse is the western media, which picks literally anything up and then twists it around to suit them best — in other words, they make you think what they want you to know so you can get it into your head and spread it around. A good example is the Guardian offcut video, which does not include any Lavrov responses and questions to him.

Today I found info on telegram that some group of Ukrainians ask hackers to hack any Russian websites, or if one has their own website with the Russian traffic -- you will receive a script that you can add so that when a visitor clicks back, they will be directed to a video that will show them the truth about the situation. This means that Ukrainians believe the Russian government covers up a great deal from their citizens. Yes, they do, in my opinion, based on what I know, but they both do.

What I would recommend to anyone who does not understand the RU or UA languages, is to take everything they read and watch here with a grain of salt.

Er, I watched the Press Conference from Turkey yesterday LIVE as it happened. He stated quite clearly that the maternity hospital had BEEN TARGETED as it was empty of patients and had been taken over by a right wing militia working in conjunction with the Ukrainian Army.

However, this completely contradicted the Russian Foreign Spokesperson - Maria Zakharova in Moscow, who just hours earlier had stated that the attack on the hospital was 'fake news' and Russia had not attacked it.

BOTH LYING.

As for any whataboutery in this thread bringing in other past conflicts to try and deflect from what Putin's Russia is doing, sorry won't work and is called whataboutery for a reason.

Edited to add: Of course both sides will use the media to sell their agenda. You need to read between the lines. What I will say is, this is very very serious for all of us in Europe and North America. In my lifetime certainly the closest we have come to outright full on war between East and the West.

It is not about deflecting, it is about being consistent in terms of leaders and their deeds and the corresponding press/media reaction. Which is whipping people into a fervour, that then leads to calls for further action, which might not be in anyone's interest. People in general will hate putin's guts with justification, but a 2 minute hate thread is just that, not going to shed light on much. It's similar to the sun newspaper's level of analysis, okay as far as it goes but this situation is more complex.

I'm not here to upset anyone or to argue, especially about the war. However, if people only see one version, they end up banging on about it over and over and often get misled. As I previously stated, I can see and clearly understand all three of them - RU, UA, and West - so the overall picture is completely different to me as it is to one that understands only English. For example, in the video above, all of these people were speaking in Russian, and the woman did not say "get out these Russian shits," which leads me to believe that the video author simply compiled some chunks of videos together, added comments, and uploaded everything to his channel. Of course, he says interesting things, but I can't take it seriously.

I don't support any of these, but I wish RU and UA were the brothers I remember them to be, even if it's unlikely.
