Hi,

So by definition, a prepaid Credit Card is a Credit Card, but for UK Gambling purposes, what is it? credit or Debit card?
Some sites will not allow deposits as its a Credit Card, some will as they say its a Debit Card.

I ask as I made a rookie mistake at the weekend and am having a "discussion" with a complaints team, would be great to have others thoughts on this.

Thanks

Hey @Roseyetta2 and welcome to the forum :)

Interesting question, I'm sure some of our more experienced members will reply to you soon :)

Prepaid cards look like credit cards and spend like credit cards but there's no credit behind them. They are technically

– when you use them, you’re spending your own money, not the bank’s. Meaning it can be used to top up Skrill, Neteller and other wallets I would assume (as it's technically not a credit card).

Are you referring to single use card which you can buy or use or some neo-bank what card you can top-up from your credit card? If credit card can be used for funding this card, it can considered as gamble with credit which is not ok.

We explained in the credit cards

that this would mean that operators could not accept any payment through an MSB unless the MSB has prevented the use of credit cards for gambling through their services. This includes, for example, circumstances where an MSB allows its customers to transfer funds from a credit card into a wallet or account which could then be used by the customer to make gambling deposits.

That's article from UKGC about these services. If you clarify which type of payment card you're actually referring it would help to be more specific.

Ahh, thanks for all the feedback, the link, very helpful, it is in essence a Credit Card, as its a pre pay Master Card and can be topped up using a Credit Card, So essentially cannot be used for UK gaming??

Some Pre paid debit cards have the same unique numbers for car rental purposes and other place that ask for imprint or copy of a credit card which does help if you don’t have a credit card, but as the identifying numbers/transactions are technically credit cards their is no middle ground with this it’s a credit card plain and simple especially for online casinos

A Credit Card which is not allowed to be used in the casinos is the one that hard to get and requires certain conditions in order to get credit (a balance which you will have to pay back).

I suppose normal British debit cards should be alright.

Thats correct. Pre-paid cards have always had weird restrictions on them, like a lot can't be used to pay for petrol

If it's pre-paid card which you can top-up it shouldn't be accepted to gambling like mentioned behind that link, Revolut mentioned as one example. If you want to confirm which providers card it is, could give more educated guess, but spirit of regulation should be what's mentioned in article. I would guess there can some cards which go through in some places if they need to block them by BIN numbers (which can make it more difficult as there are so many providers for these cards these days), some companies who provide such card have restricted gambling transactions from their UK customers.

Thanks, its an Optimum Mastercard, I've had mixed reactions from different sites, some do some don't, after I read the link above, I checked and I can top up via credit card, so assuming I shouldn't - which is a pain as thats why I originally bought it.

Looks it shouldn't be accepted. There are so many of these type of services that there probably always are some which can be used. Operators should be blocking these but it can be bit challenging to be up to date of all providers, don't know how UKGC react to these in practice as blocking these all and be up to date about all services can be quite challenging.

If you have problems to control your gambling, best is not to get these kind of new cards to get around of these blocks. Your credit card can't be used for deposits so if you only want to be sure you don't gamble with it, getting these kind of cards don't really help with it but is more circumventing use of credit card. Getting new cards to deposit and then claiming them back when knowing what doing is not really cool.

Given the propensity of online casino's to look for reasons not to pay you out I would be very careful trying to find a loophole in the UKGC direction. Do you really want to win that 4 or 5 figure sum to find out that not only do you have to go through verification and SOW but also to find out that regulation 2345, sub para 1, sub sub para 345 (printed in Calibri Font 2 ) states that you cannot be refunded to that card, but must have your money paid back to the original deposit method !

If making any such refund request, be also aware to provide every possible part of your finances possibly can be requested, including credit card statements where all these top-ups do show to clarify these are funds used for gambling etc. If asking deposits to be refunded just because happened to lose when played, would really complete extended sow as possible as such refund could be categorized to be done with abuse purpose.

I didn't use it to find a loophole! I have been using it for years now as a way of spending what I can afford. The law changed in April, which is a pain!
My issue was originally due to the site locking me out halfway through play, I then found out I had SE'd with one of their sister sites (usually I check licences before signing up- hence the rookie mistake) they offered to refund what was left on my deposit, but not the whole amount. So I decided to be belligerent and use the CC as extra annoyance for them.

However, thanks for the patronising tone- always appreciated.

Thats the point, any surplus income that I want to use to indulge in Gambling could be transferred and used in any way I decide, I earn it! using a prepaid card ensures that in the event my details are compromised, my bank account remains safe, I may deserve a tin hat, but I try to be careful when purchasing anything online and this is my way of doing that.
