Anybody recommend a poker room for a novice who wants to start playing online. I have played in friendly home games so I do know the rules but just want to learn the 'real' game. Would like to start playing for free and then progress to money play.

After reading some of the posts here, I don't want to get caught up in a rogue.

Thanks.

Try pitbullpoker.com

Its open to US players

You get $10 no deposit bonus (through an affiliate link - Check casinomeister - If not I'll send you a link)

they have freerolls ever hour (on the half hour)

They have a flash version

The site is fairly small but the standard isnt too high. I taught someone to play there.

Thanks for the info. Please send me the affiliate link as I didn't find anything on CM.

Annie, I didnt want to post anything spammy, so I thought it best to leave out the code. I would always direct people from the forum to Casinomeister links, if available.

Use the bonus code "FREEGIFT" when you register. No link required just go directly to the site. Make sure you use the code because it is no nonger advertised on the site.

What they usually do is give you a telephone call to confirm. You get the cash within an hour. It also gives you 200% up to $200 on First Deposit.

I have played at many many poker sites over the years, and i have never found one that even comes close to Pacific for sheer fishyness.
They do not offer reload bonuses so you do not get bonus hunters grinding out at the low limits.
I swear the looseness is contagious:lolup:
I think this is a great place to learn to play with lots of traffic and easy games, the software has recently improved ( still not the best though ) and they have a learning school.
But this is just my opinion...i think with online poker you have to play at a place that " feels right " to yourself.

If you want to learn the game...

Try Doyles Room.

The best players play at Doyles room.

If you want to learn how to play, play with the best.

The reason I picked Pitbull was because its a smaller site. Seems less intimidating when you are starting out & It may help with confidence when you get a few places in the freerolls. I generally play at pokerstars & fulltilt, more because of the numbers at the sites and the ability to multitable. Im not a big holdem fan so the selection of other poker variations are better at these two sites.

Hey Anniemac.........I'd suggest Carbon Poker. They have some free games and some small stakes tables and several pretty good freerolls that you can play after you make a small 1st deposit. They usually offer a nice 1st deposit bonus also. It's also a small poker room so it's a good place to start out, I would think. I like the software, it's not cluttered and it's pretty easy to find game and stakes that you are looking for. You didn't say what game or games that most interest you but Texas Hold'em is of course the most popular. If you are looking for some 5 card or 7 card stud you can find that there also.

Good Luck!
:)

As Gary suggested, I'd stick with a small site starting out. The sharks at the big sites can eat you alive even playing small stakes at the bigger sites.

Its in the Numbers

I do not know at what time you wish to play but the site that best guarantees action all day, everyday for every tyenpe of poker game you can wish for, pokerStars is the place to go.

Despite its enourmous membership base, their customer service is nice, not neglectful, payouts come as promised in the time frame they advertise and many of the people at the play money tables are not just all-in every hand type of player, so you can actually learn the game the right way.

I also advise you to play both sit-n-go style and ring game tables to learn the subtle but different styles required to thrive at either tournament poker or cash game poker.

Playing online is the safest option. Real game is much more interesting and at times heart breaking as well when you loss money. There are so many sites like
Poker-gratis. it
Dejeuxpoker.com and many more. You can just check by playing on it. I know it is not an English site but still it have all the facility you are looking for. Just try it once you will definitely like it I am sure. I am suggesting different language sites because I believe that game doesnt have any language
