Question... I'm from Australia and play the slots/pokies online, as an Australian player I can't play allot of land based games online, which includes all slots/pokies by Aristocrat, IGT, and Novamatic... What I'd like to know is this just the Australian Government being tight again and dictating where we spend our gambling funds or issues with actual companies or casinos (like Bet365 etc)?

This question has plagued me for a while... I thought what better way than to ask this question at Casinomeister where there's a whole bunch of knowledgeable online gamblers who can answer this for me ;)

It is because of our laws here at the minute, any Aussie should take a read of this

The problems with Aristocrat and IGT allowing Australians to play on their software is that they would be risking getting huge fines and would most likely lose their share of the Australian land based pokie market which as you know is huge and big business so they are not going to risk it.

So unfortunately until our government gets its behind into gear with legalising online casino gambling (not looking likely these days) we will always be forbidden in the shadows :p

The last progress our government had that mentioned anything to do with online gambling was the debate over whether to legalise Live betting, so I think casinos are way off atm.

Thanks for the informative post :)

Figured that had something to do with the Australian government being tight. I'm really not a believer in any of the other reasons they stated... Maybe they should become a bit more strict on the regulation of land based pokies and the smart ones wouldn't feel the need to gamble our money away to another country ;)

There's been something fishy going on at my local for some time now, it's a well known place, I've got a fair few friends that go there and they all say the same thing. I first started going there about a year ago, back when it was packed, these day's compared to what it used to be there's hardly anyone there. I have a friend who wanted to make a complaint and hopefully have someone check the machines out... He didn't know where to start and found that every route turned out to be a dead end... His now a convert

My major bumber is that I cant play games like Wizard of Oz or Ghostbusters that arent available in Australia :(

The sad thing here is that the Aussies led the world in their progressive approach to online gambling a decade or so ago, and then there was an abrupt about-turn to where we are today - possibly the resuilt of a change in the ruling political partty (?) I can't recall what triggered the retreat.ut it resulted in some good operators (some of them Aussies) shutting their virtual doors.

Since then the government commissioned an exhaustive study by the Productivity Commission, which after some time came out with a report that recommended the legalisation of online gambling, but the issue became something of a political football and the Gillard government ultimately rejected the possibility.

In between all this we had the astonishing prospect of the Aussie government in the form of Communications Minister Stephen Conroy trying to introduce ISP blocking, which seems to have gone very quiet of late.

There are some major and well established online gambling companies in the land of Oz - you guys could do so well off the industry with some rational political thinking in your Cabinet.

Thanks for the response :)

That's definitely a shame, not surprised that the Gillard Government rejected the possibility, she's done great things like abolishing Dental Health benefits

I completely agree, they would do so well. Many Australians enjoy a good punt and can do so online, such a shame we are so far behind that we allow online sportsbooking but not gambling.

I tried not to get into our politicians or we could be here all week. You are so very right, and it is such a shame our government has seemed to turn a blind eye to the issue so far even after the reforms.

What's Lasseters?

Lasseters was a regulated online casino in Australia and based in Darwin, they could not accept aussie players though.

Actually, just to correct the bit about dental health.....the scheme that just ended, the Chronic Disease Dental program, was started by John Howard, and it had the right thinking behind it....but it was fatally flawed and we could no longer afford it. Why? The benefits were not means or income tested. Hence, Rupert Murdoch, James Packer could get $5000 of free dental work if they had any kind of chronic disease....diabetes, bad back, emphysema, migraines etc, which only required your doctors signature to claim. It was being taken advantage of by multi millionaires and others who could easily afford it themselves.....many of whom used the $5000 to have teeth extracted or root canal work done or have a few implants done, and then spent $10,000's of their own money on a whole lot of cosmetic stuff etc. It was supposed to help the chronically ill who couldn't afford dental care to improve their quality of life and oral function. It cost $2 billion per year.

The scheme is being replaced (AFAIK) with a means tested needs-based program, which included prevention as well as resolution of oral issues. Makes much more sense. The only gripe I have is that they closed the scheme with 2 months notice, and aren't replacing it for 2 years....saving $4 billion, but leaving the public with poorer access to dental services. It should be noted that emergency treatment is always available at public dental clinics with 24 hrs and ongoing work is practically free, subject to waiting lists as with public hospitals. Compared to some countries we are still very lucky.

Anyway, sorry for the derail.

The Australian Hotels Association and Clubs are vehemently opposed to it, and they are a powerful lobby.....along with the killjoys and zealots who don't understand it but oppose it anyway (as usual).

You can go blow your wages every Thursday just around the corner playing the slots at 88%.....no problem. Whatever you do.....don't sit at home and do it.....that would be immoral and wrong

The horse racing industry doesn't want it either....another powerful group that brings in the bacon

No... Thanks for the derail :) I was sorely disappointed by this move from the government. You've just shed more light on that

Figured that was the case. Only about ten percent of my gambling budget gets blown on those 88% slots these days. I still thoroughly enjoy the old Aristocrat machines but that's a very expensive form of entertainment. Would be wiser to indulge in some caviar and fragua while playing the slots online ;)

ok from what ive seen in boot up of these machine and payout checks the actual payout rtp is 87% max ive seen a few inder that as well with every new revision of the land based games the payout times are set differently as in there made for more small 2 dollar wins than say 20 dollar wins its hard to win on them i am quite annoyed myself about the fact australians have less choice in online gaming lets just hope that one day this changes ...look at it this way walk into any pokie joint in aus 100 is gone in like 30 mins evan on one cent a line so online is the only way to go to at least get a fair bet i think it will come down to a day when venues will be empty and igt aristocrat will be forced to allow aussie players to make there money
