pc's virus an win xp

a few know that I have been having problems with my pc 1st my flat screen monitor went out less then 2 yrs old so I got 1 of them huge bulky ugly ones an hooked it up
next thing I know I am going from website to website an the pc starts scanning something an then I get this pop up saying I have a nasty virus I try to scan with my virus protector an it wont let me no website will come up except the 1 that wants me to pay for the virus software to repair the virus
so I try to get it off my pc cant do it so I drag out the back up pc that my nephew says is good to go he added windows XP to it when he was last here
so I am updating it etc an wtf I get a windows XP is not valid an I have a big blue star an a big blue ? mark for the world to see an to top that off right by the lower taskbar it says invalid copy of windows
I didnt break any mirrors sigh
oh an Windows XP they want like $179 right now cant do it

Yea that what happens you register the computer. But you can use the computer nonetheless. Microsoft is cracking down of fake software and they put these measures in place to prevent fraud. I might have the original disk for XP if you need it let me know I think you might need a key to unlock it I see if I can find it.

The problem lies in the fact that that key is virtually useless for installation on a different computer.

Installing a legit copy of XP is a two step process. First, you have to enter the serial key during setup in order to install XP. Once XP is installed, you have to go through the registration process, before you can even use XP, which can take place either online or over the phone. This is where it gets tricky, as you can use any valid key to get XP installed, but in order to actually use it, it has to be a "clean" key that hasn't been used on any other computer in the past.

I'm not sure why it's telling you that it's not a legit copy of XP, unless he simply entered a key that was used and registered on another computer in the past. A friend of mine upgraded computers awhile back and ran into the exact same situation. He could install XP just fine, but when it came time to register his copy to get it to run, it wouldn't let him. What he did was call the number given during the registration process and explain to them that he's installing XP on a new computer and that it's now the only computer that it's running on, now that the old computer was out of service.

ps: If you can in fact use XP the way it is with it telling you that it's not a legit copy, you won't be able to use windows update, download service packs or get certain updates such as the new media player and so forth.

The reason I was going to give her XP is because I am running Vista. But I got to dig through my stuff to find it. But yeah I know what your saying.

If this is the same virus I received, it will mask itself as Norton's 360. I had to purchase and download the Stopzilla program to get rid of it. I just reformatted my computer again this weekend, cause I received another virus that masked itself as AVG.

i had a problem once recovering a window's system and on the phone with them they t old me that i needed a new number i said wtf i own this pc and the programs in it to use in this pc


bottom line they gave me a new number free of charge :thumbs up:

and told me that the same problem would happen again if same scenario

well i said then dont run out of numbers

Probably not. Viruses infect MANY areas of the hard drive and operating system. If it happens to live in the java folder, for example, only complete removal of that directory might solve the problem.

The free 30-day trial for Kapersky has no limitations.
Maybe give it a try before you do anything too drastic.

the only thing about that is before I can launch anything the virus takes over scanning an popping up windows an when I click a link it comes up that dreaded blue screen about checking your connection
I could try it in safe mode tho

If you're talking about the restore CD that came with your computer, then yes it will work. These CD's will format the hard drive and everything for you.

I set up my pc to reformat it yesterday turned the power on to the pc an the monitor an the monitor would not come on so we go an get another monitor an it wouldnt work either I am thinkin wth in all 3 monitors would not come on with that pc but the 1 works fine with this crappy pc

if i may suggest bring it to best buy [if theres one near you ] here were im at there conviently located they have taken my tower and on the recieveing counter they run a test in front of you and tell you if it can be fixed if not then ask about a new or rebuilt/used
what ever price you want to pay

they also can reload windows xp or others i believe they own rights to re sell

my guess is a 75.00 fix

What you have is actually a trojan.

It will duplicate its self every single time you open up internet explorer, Ive had PLENTY of the exact same virus as you have had and the onyl way to fix it is running the anti virus CD from "safe mode".


you need to start your computer in safe mode, once you have done this put the anti virus Cd in and run a complete scan from there, safe mode only uses minimal programs etc so it does a lot better scan.

Anothr way is opening your task manager and closing off "internet exploere.exe" and this prevents the sytem logging onto the internet for now, then run your scan that way. once its done you will probably need to do a spyware clean to get rid of the rest of the trojan.

I have to say JAs those ones are bloody hell to get rid of.

Worst comes to the worst do a complete reinstall.

Ok I am not sure if this would work for you but it did for my computer and a friends. As you shut your puter off and it starts back up keep hitting the f10 button and then click reinstall full puter. This will take about a hour or so.
On friends puter trojan was gone and the puter itself had the key number for microsoft so that is all that was needed. then you just get into windows and start upgrading your ie firefox and players again.

As these trojans are usually self propagating, you must disconnect the system from the internet before/during cleaning, rebooting, etc. If you 'injure' the trojan (clean part of it off) it goes out to the web and will install a new version of itself... and usually brings back its cousins and brothers and .... etc....

When hubby's computer got hit with a drive by install, it took me 12 solid hours of cleaning, rebooting, screaming, researching (on the clean computer) for cleaners.

On a clean computer, I downloaded Hijack This, Spybot S&D, and a couple other specific cleaners to a flash drive. Took the flash to the sick computer and ran the proggies from the flash -- the trojan even disabled his CD/DVD drive. (and then I cleaned/formatted the flash after use on the infected machine)

Hi Thanks so much for all the suggestions I ended up formatting the hard drive but...... I have just one slight problem that is driving me nuts an I cannot find where to fix it

when I scroll it scrolls like in a wave pattern like I am drunk an it drives me nuts i cannot find where to change this to normal

any thoughts?

Make sure you do the updates for your video card, it could help. Also, under control panel you can adjust the settings for your screen (pixels). I had to do a complete reinstall too. What a pain in the butt, I'm still doing updates on all my stuff. Good luck!

TBH, Windows 7 is actually faster than both XP and Vista, and it's better than both, IMO..I run Windows 7 and it's a pretty seamless "upgrade" from the end-user's point of view, even if they're making the major transition from XP.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I'm sure others will agree with me when I say that Windows 7 is the best version released since XP came out. It definitely runs circles around Vista.

jas2587, what kind of computer do you have? A lot of times your computer comes with a ghost image of your original hard drive and you can restore all your drivers and OS from there. It is much easier than using the cd because then you have to figure out what all drivers you had on it.

The key strokes for OS system restore to factory settings are all different on the computer brands. It will restore in around 30-45 minutes. It will wipe your hard drive clean of everything including the virus.

Almost every review I read about windows 7 is great, even from the likes of Maximum PC and other well known PC mags.

I've only been running it for a couple of months and definitely notice an increase in overall performance. As far as stability, I've never had a BSOD, and I leave my computer running 24/7/365. I definitely can't say that about Vista, so the stability definitely rivals XP.

I usually don't upgrade my OS until, like you said, it's been proven, but IMO, it's been proven.

I actually like vista. I did not run out and get it right off the shelf, it was out for about a year when I got my computer.

I've been a PC user since the days of DOS.

But the reviews for Windows 7 seem great. If I was buying off the shelf with OS included, I would pick that.

I won't pay what the upgrade costs, buy buying new, it seems like the bomb.

Reviews are like um...you know, every one has one..

It is when it is put to the test that is important. Go on any website and learn what is WRONG with the OS when it first comes out. You would be surprised on how many issues a new OS has..

I have both on all my computers also. It is the only way you can fix an issue with either browser when you crash, you have to have another browser to fix the other one...
