I received one today, the scammers are a little smarter now. Usually the link is something like johnsmith.com/paypal so it's pretty easy to spot, this one they did a whole website and they actually did a good job on the link, people might actually fall for it.
It doesnt really matter as the Paypal guys are crooks themselves. Their lies would make Virtual blush. Since March I had tried to transfer funds to paypal for the sake of purchasing goods online. They keep telling me that my account details did not match my details in the transfer. I did it 4 times and when I finally told them they must let me know what didnt match they said that the name sequence differed in my Paypal account from the bank's transfer details. They promised that if I altered the name sequence at Paypal the transfer will go through. I did this but they said sorry it's too late and your money has been returned to your bank. They pleaded with me to make a fifth transfer promising that this is bound to go through. OK so I did it and then they say' sorry your bank code does not match. I was furious but they said they had originally made a mistake and the bank code was the only thing that mismatched. I obtained an email from my bank confirming that the bank code was correct and now they suddenly say that my bank transferred the funds in the name of the bank and not in my name.
These frigging bastards are either completely incompetent or they do not want anyone from my place/jurisdiction to make a successful deposit for fear of money laundering. Hell, its equivalent to the sum of USD 70 only . They are also aware of the fact that I am unable to get hold of the authority that regulates them. Any of you guys know about this?
I get these all the time, my suggestion would be to use Gmail! They are so good at knowing whether an email is genuine or not. I have used Gmail for 6 years now and all the emails that land in my spam are 99.9% of the time correct to be there. #Just a suggestion
Not everyone is that computer savvy and I'm sure these phishing scams still work or the scammers wouldn't be doing it. I normally check to see if the website is still active, and sometimes I 'log in' with a fake email and a sweary password just to vent my frustration, and then I report it to Paypal so they can shut it down.
@chuchu, I've been using Paypal for a long time and never had any problems, although I do usually only use them to get paid. I know once I had some trouble with something on the website, I contacted them but never got a response, although they did fix the problem.
