, a group of 101 Labour MPs are supporting Gordon Brown's calls for the government to raise taxes on gambling companies in order to tackle child poverty.

MPs argue that while betting companies in the UK have seen their sales grow significantly in recent years, they employ relatively few people, are often located outside the UK in order to minimise their tax bills, and therefore bring “little value to the UK economy”.

“No child should be growing up in poverty while gambling companies continue to enjoy record profits,” says Alex Ballinger, MP for Halesowen.

He added: "Harms from gambling place a huge burden on our public services, costing the Exchequer over £1 billion a year.

"It’s time to confront these excessive profits, reduce gambling-related harm, tackle poverty, and ensure gambling is taxed fairly."

The group of MPs believe the gambling industry in the UK is “lightly taxed” compared with other countries, and they want Chancellor Rachel Reeves to introduce the changes recommended by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a think tank.

I wish MPs would argue about the need for most UKGC licensed casinos to drop RTPs… As it is, the justification for this is supposedly due to increased taxes in this area already, if I’m not mistaken? The result will be even lower RTPs and possibly less operators in this market.

Oh, and offshore crypto casinos…

The UK government has snookered itself by saying it would not raise taxes before they got elected. To avoid getting accused of breaking their word they are going after every other taxable opportunity that doesn't hit tax payers directly.

There is no chance that the UKGC will do anything about RTP's. It is actually the crypto casinos which may bring back more favourable RTP's as licensed casinos lose more and more players to this section of the market.

Yes, fat chance. After all this is one in favour of the customer… Good point about crypto potentially pushing regulated markets back up.

Although an increased gambling tax might squeeze the market and result in less operators, which would only reduce the need for the remaining to be competitive. There are a lot of gamblers who have no idea how to deal with crypto, and a significant amount who would never take the risk. They will be the ones who will bear the brunt of this.

Isn’t gambling fun.

Surely there comes a point that these companies can no longer justify staying in the UK market at which point the amount of tax they government can bring in from it will actually go down rather than up.

If they only way to 'afford' the extra costs is for sites to lower RTP further it will either push people to crypto sites or make people who stay lose their money faster and leave.

Personally I straight up refuse to play a game offered somewhere if it's not the highest RTP version. If everywhere becomes the lowered ones I'd either go Crypto or stop completely.

Yes, the law of diminishing returns, last heard mentioned by a Chancellor back in 1984 when Ken Clarke refused to raise scotch tax for the same reason. Seems to have been forgotten since.

Never mind, KYC should be a breeze soon at the new 88-90% casino RTP resulting from the tax hike, with the new ID cards in the pipeline. What could possibly go wrong?
They are meant to serve us not us them. Tgis would give them the power to control every aspect of our lives. And hear they are trying to manipulate public opionion

The UK has slowly been moving towards a dictatorship for years but has rapidly accelerated since COVID. It's really sad to se it, but it will end up becoming very similar to China within the next 10 years; we are already seeing restrictions on social media posts, to the point where people are worried about what they say as it does not fit the current narrative and can end up getting a knock on the door from the old bill because you have upset someone on faebook. Can't get the police to come round if someone trys to steal your car (unless you call the police and say you have knocked the shit out the people trying to steal the car, then they come arrest you lol) ID's are just a way of keeping people further under rule and I am sure it will be linked in someway to taxes at some point - so cash in hand jobs become fewer (no more mates rates for builders)

Annoyingly its very short sighted and this current government really does not see how what they are doing is impacting people - a couple of examples:

The Online Safety Act - completley pointless. Kids just download a VPN, but for those working in certain industries are now feeling a lot pain due to restrictions

ID passes for everyone - helps no one really as those people who are here illegally just wont sign up. Unless it is linked directly to NHS treatments etc. then it won't have the perceived impact. Plus with all the cyber attacks happening recently, it will be interesting to see what government branch would take responsibility for everyones personal information in one place

The upcoming budget - the working man/woman (apologies but I only recognise two genders, which I know can get me arressted and upset some <insert desired tag line here> but I really don't care) is going to hit the working/middle class hard. No way the average working person gets out of the budget without some financial loss. Ironic really seeing as the last chancellor swerved a big stamp duty bill.

New gambling tax - realistically, its only going to affect the punter at the end of the day

Really sad that it's going this way - I really worry for my 4 year old son growing up in this world.

This will not effect the super rich or those in charge. The poor will be able to sell their petrol/airmiles to the rich. Slowly they will add aspects to the ID card saying it is a benefit to society when in reality it leads to more control. Remembering more and more jobs will be taken over by tech leaving us "useless eaters"

Again why the fuck is that bigoted charlatan still having an influence in our current government? And again why is it that people that want to have a hobby that is enjoyable for them being used to fund families that can't afford children under their own circumstance? Why does my enjoyment get taxed for that exactly, not like we don't get taxed for enough things already that the future looks like a 94% version (Or worse..) of hunting for the D. What an absolute crock of shite.

As for the ID cards, I do despair. In principal, we've desperately needed a unified system that aggregates one's right to work checks and work references, I've been a contractor for 50% of my life and for those roles I've had to provide an insane level of paperwork and ID (Also had to have it witnessed by a professional that knows me too) just to prove my eligibility to work in the UK. Do I trust a central system run by the Government or whatever craptastic entity it'll get farmed out to (Accenture, Crapita, Tata)? Not a chance. As with anything, going to deliver 10% of the features promised, it'll run abysmally, cost 4x what was projected to cost and be delivered 10 years after it was meant to.

The big issue for me is the combination of a digital ID linked to a smartphone - effecivley meaning (and I am not part of the tin foil hat brigade) that the government (or whoever they sell the data to) will be able to know exactly where you are/where you have been etc. and it feels far too much like a dictatorship to me.

I agree the super rich/those in charge will be exempt for "security reasons" whilst the rest of us bend over and take it. We might try to fight it, but it will be actually quite easy for the government to implement it when they attach it to passports or PAYE details/benefits etc.

With any luck, they will outsource the management to one of the major porn providers which will save me having to either use a VPN or upload ID if I want to watch a quick bluey before bed as they can verify my ID through the mandated government ID :)

Absolutely no way will anything like this be installed on my phone. If and it is a big IF, I am eventually forced to have a digital id card, I will get a burner phone specifically for it.

Welcome to George Orwell's 1984, or for Arnie fans, The Running Man.

Have you read/listened to the original Running Man (Stephen King) - I am a big fan of the Arnie film but the audiobook/original novel is amazing and a lot darker
