Greetings, all. Been too long...

I've just completed a preliminary study on NJ players based on a survey I ran through Facebook (if you are in the NJ area and want to participate, search for "NJ Online Casino and Poker Survey"on FB and take it please!).

Here are the initial results:
Survey Says: New Jersey Gamblers Know Atlantic City Brands but Know Nothing About Online Plans

(20 November 2013 – London) While Atlantic City casinos have a high prompted recognition rate amongst New Jersey gamblers, over 50% of players know nothing about the casinos’ plans to go online starting next week.

Preliminary results of a survey of over 300 gamblers in New Jersey this week reveal two surprising facts: 1) a significant portion of online gamblers in the state are already playing at offshore sites and 2) over half of gamblers have no knowledge of the impending online launches of Atlantic City. This despite the fact that several of the AC casinos and their largely UK/Gibraltar-based partners have plans to launch online as early as the end of November.

“While the new legal AC brands will have lots of new competition from their friends all along the Boardwalk, they’ll also need to shift players from incumbent ‘offshore’ operators,” Alex Czajkowski, creator of the survey and founder of egaming consultancy Agency LEX . “Over 39% of respondents are playing online poker now, 50% of those in the past year. And 25% are playing online casinos, 42% of those have played online for real money in the past year.”

The Facebook-based survey is generating responses from New Jersey gamblers -- 94% of the respondents have gambled in a “land-based” casino. The prompted recognition of the AC brands is quite high, with The Borgata, Trump Taj Mahal, Bally’s, Harrah’s and Caesar’s all coming on at over 85%, and the Plaza Tropicana and Showboat coming over 80%. Only the struggling Atlantic Club suffers with only 39% prompted recognition.

But the casinos’ online plans remain unknown to over 50% of these active gamblers. 20% of the respondents knew that The Borgata has online plans, 10% knew of Harrah’s and Caesar’s and just over 5% thought “some or all” of them are coming online.

Large UK brands, including AC participants Betfair, Jackpotjoy and 888, and all the major UK sports books, are virtually unknown in New Jersey, with 80% or more of the players not recognising their brands. The once US-dominating poker brands fared slightly better, with Full Tilt, PokerStars, and Party Poker achieving at least a 60% recognition rate.

One reassuring trend for the AC operators is that cannibalization in the casino should be minimal. While 30% of players expect to spend more online when the sites are, 75% say they’ll continue to spend the same or more offline.

The survey, which is still on-going at

, has attracted a 57%/43% male/female mix, with 65% of the respondents between 45 and 54 years old. Additional surveys are planned for other states as their legislation process matures.
