I stopped making new year resolutions a long time ago. If i need to make a change in my life, no matter what it is, i make it then and there.
As for the gambling habit i have a pretty firm budget formula since i am a freelancer and my earnings are commissions only. Hence my income fluctuates all the time, not too badly but i do have some high spikes when i had large projects and i do have lows 1 or 2 months/year.
20% - gaming (max $5K/month, anything above is going into the savings and living expenses)
20% - to my son, part directly, part into his college fund (max $5K/month, anything above is going into the savings and living expenses)
20% - savings for months with low commission payments and for my early retirement at the age of 55
20% - to finance my work
20% - my living expenses
It has served me well ever since i started being a freelance agent in 2008. Anything else would just make my life "hell" in the long run as I would throw too much at the slots and then get me into trouble because i don't have the funds to give to my son or visit customers or pay my daily expenses.
In summary, i do play my budget every month and if it is lost before the end of the month, i do maybe 1 or 2 small deposits/week and the other times i ask for comps/FS to keep me entertained until i am filling-up the gaming kitty again. On the other hand, any leftovers from the budget or winnings at the end of the month go straight into savings and extras for my son.
Any player should have a clear conscience when on the reels, meaning only play with money you can afford to lose as otherwise you will have no fun, quite to the contrary, you will put pressure on yourself chasing losses which you could not afford to lose from the start.
