Hi,

i think of myself as being above average online poker player.

Never played to earn money though.
Is it possible to earn like 5$+ per hour playing small bets?
Or would you say I shouldn't even think of this at all?

Or will I only struggle to earn rake for the sites and earn nothing or lose?

If you think it's possible what kind of games and what sites would you suggest?

What I DO KNOW is that playing SPIN AND GO is completely whack for obvious reasons,
but being a slot player sometimes it's hard to resist that BIGMONEY promise which always ends up
being you get 2x instead of 3x regular pay.:mad::mad:
(oh yeah, and the occasional 4x to make you feel like you broke the bank :D)

Don't think like that and worry about per hour, Just worry about playing your best and if you come out ahead than that's great. If you worry about making so much per hour/ per day (like me, even 10 bucks a day would be nice) or whatever you will start to play bad as that is all you are thinking about.

Completely agree to what slotsmaster said. I had my experience in Everest on tables with 5/10 cents blind stakes. My strategy was mutlitabling rock-style and bluffing only on exceptional occasions. Small winnings plus rakeback can grant you a decent profit (no way to make the "big" money), but with the time it becomes boring and tiresome. Besides the big poker boom is over.

Cheers

if you were playing rock style, then no wonder you got bored! Lol.
It's also so noticable(even more so if you multitable with that style) to others apart from new fish who are useless and dont understand the game, that once you get onto the flop and continue to the turn then anyone who knows what you are doing and has a good level of poker is literally able to put you on one of 2 hands , an overpair or ak. I used to destroy rocks on 10nl & especially 25nl tables for that exact reason. They could take tiny blinds pre flop but constantly get stacked by suckering them in with much looser hands while they try to protect or value bet the PP making it to hard to let go of on the river once the pot is tasty. after calling pre with good pot odds and hitting 2 pair or a huge draw that made it on the turn id always expect to stack them tbh. It amazed me that some rocks, seeing me everyday, didnt adjust to this.
Can understand playing very tight if mutlitabling though, so much harder to keep track of what others are doing and when i couldnt be assed to pay attention or was watching tv at the same time i found myself doing similar.
I tended to play mostly Loose Aggressive but sometimes tight aggressive depending on my opponents on the table at the time. And with either style would play 2-3 tables max due to needing to find exploits and keep an eye on what some cheeky buggers are doing as LA requires so much more thought.

There is still good money to be made even on 5/10 multitabling using expolitative poker, but concentration and a good memory is a must lol. Also cannot stress enough, one of the biggest requirements is not to think of how much you want to make on a daily basis as already has been said here, been there myself many a time with no other income and made thousands upon thousands of poor decisions as a result of the money being very important! Id slap myself for thinking that way and get into gear afterwards, only to often then have a few bad beats n suckouts follow and want to rip my hair out and be on the verge of tilt lol.

being a profitable poker player is much less about skill in the game and much more about finding fish/whales

And that's hard to do online, I think.
First , they're harder to spot.
Second, there are less of them online.
These kinds of players often want to enjoy the social aspect of the game and want to be SEEN
when they win.

So online you hardly find any real fish (these days) because it's all college students trying
to earn extra cash, having read at least 1/2 poker books.

So DID you EVER make money on a consistent basis playiner online poker?

I often get the feeling it's really not that different from slots if you/re not a guru with rakeback deals,
blacking a zillion tables at once like a maniac.

Also I have the feeling these days there are quite a few bots playing, which are definitely above
the ranks of fish and mediocre players.

I think it's easier to make money .... doing ANYTHING else, really.
Playing slots maybe ? :rolleyes::D:thumbsup:

First and foremost, it is possible to make money playing poker online these days. It is not as easy as it was in say, 2007 but it can be done, and is done, by a great deal of players every year.

Secondly, if you want to play with the purpose of earning steady money each day, you're approaching the problem in the wrong way. That is impossible. The variance in poker, even for a winning player, is far too high to track and tamp down on a daily basis. Even on a monthly basis, with high volume play, winning is not always achievable. Poker is very much a long-term game and it is possible for great winning players to play 100,000 hands or more and lose over that sample size purely due to normal standard deviation in cards. It is possible to make x dollars/day, however, not consistently, but on average, over time.

A better goal is not to look at the money, but at the winrate. If you think of things in terms of money while playing poker, you are almost certain to fail. Once you deposit onto a site, don't think of it as money, because it's not. You can't spend it. It's simply poker chips, and poker chips are a tool with which you ply your trade, much like a hammer is to a carpenter or a baseball bat is to a professional ball player. If you think of every pot you lose as a lost meal/electricity bill/car payment, you're approaching the game in the completely wrong way!

Insofar as sites to suggest, I'd suggest small to medium sized sites with one of two approaches. Sites with an above average amount of fishy players or sites with above average rakeback/VIP rewards. The former sites will have higher winrates on the tables and the later sites will lower winrates but more of a "steady paycheck" feeling as you grind out reward payments.

Don't think like that and worry about per hour, Just worry about playing your best and if you come out ahead than that's great. If you worry about making so much per hour/ per day (like me, even 10 bucks a day would be nice) or whatever you will start to play bad as that is all you are thinking about.

Good advice!

My strategy was mutlitabling rock-style and bluffing only on exceptional occasions. Small winnings plus rakeback can grant you a decent profit (no way to make the "big" money), but with the time it becomes boring and tiresome.

Almost every job becomes boring and tiresome over time. It's just human nature to dislike repetitive things!

Yer, during my lazy days i played at 888. Sometimes 1 table, mostly 2. Rarely but sometimes 3. Mostly 9 seater cash games.
I would never end the day down, i was very confident in my game and al l the regulars respected me. I was cashing out weekly but leaving in enough to play, i had no other income and spent so much time playing it got to the point i would turn poker on before making breakfast in the morning.
Fish and especially stations helped the bankroll, and 888 was full of them .. but i preferred playing better players as it kept my game sharp, when i eventually startex chasing stations (sounds like a song name lol) my game dropped a bit as vs those people you are only ever really value betting and never making plays or doing bluffs.
In the end i gave up and got a job lol... but yes, i judged it on weekly profits but there was very rare i had 1 day that didnt result in profit..
I was mostly as said, playing 888 on 12/25c blinds.. occasioanly the odd 5/10 table at the same time.
The real kicker was the casino. I knew my habits (hence my name i was given by people in the arcade in my town before it closed down, where i made money on awp fruit machines) knew my habits in that i couod get addicted to the slots so always avoided it on 888. Then one day i tried, and before i knew it i was donating a large portion of my poker profit into the casino slots as it was 1 click away and the casino wouldnt block me from the slots lol. And it affected my game because i would chase calling stations in poker to gauruntee more funds when my balance was very low very often after donating to the slots, to the point my game suffered as a result as i was not playing like i would before vs good players and i also had the need of money on my mind a lot. Up till then i didnt care who i played on that limit, the profit was very consistant. But so were the hours. 888 was ridiculously loose at the time, player wise.

Edit: and i never played with rakeback, i didnt even know about it until the last few months before stopping lol. Such a dumb thing, missed out on thousands!

My biggest tilt was 300 down on 12/25nl lol. I was drunk and lost it, that was a significant amount i ended up pushing all in pre like 50 times almost in a row vs 8 other players.. but when i actually picked up kk i pushed again, at that point i was playing with my last buy in lol.. and a german lady who also played every single day called me next to act with ak. I knew she wouldnt be calling light and sunk my head thinking its going to be qq kk or aa. She had ak, hit the ace,, and i just sulked. Knowing me as a reg, she told me to sit on another table and would chip dump the 25 back to me, ill never forget that generosity as i had literally 20 bucks to myname, not that she knew.. but she had seen me tilt off 250-300.
I declined but she insisted, and gave me about 22 back which i managed to get my roll back up with. Her nick was witten(something) . I never did fully explain just how greatful i was to her for that, but it was such a kind thing to do. I had already accepted the loss but she said she meant to call not realizing i had gone all in.

I also remember one guy coming down from high stakes on tilt, said he had lost about 10k in a few bad beats. He proceeded to sit on the table and push all in every single hand on 12/25 for well over an hour, regardless if he had won and trebbled up he'd just keep doin it, while it was sad to see it was also kind of hilarious... you had a waiting list of about 25 people to join the table lol and never saw a flop during that time. And a few arguments where one would call his all in for 100 (everyone had huge stacks as a result, on a 25 buy in table) and occasinally someone else wojld call as well.. and ud see the first caller shit his pants and say WTF U DOIN MAN!! that particular guy had kk and so did the guy who called his kk and the initial tilter who had absolute crap with the all in push. The nutter lost just over 1k on 25nl before leaving. Gave me about 175 :/ .

One can not become a pro poker player while gambling on slots, blackjack, roulette, etc. Playing in the casino is the exact opposite of what one is trying to achieve on the poker tables. It's just not going to work out long-term (and probably not short-term either)! The only way to be a long-term winning professional poker player is to avoid actual gambling. Not many people are cut out for it though. The lure of the slots, pai gow, (insert casino game) is too strong for many!

I know bro ;) im 35 but been playing land based Awp fruit machines since i was 7 years old, began making £ from them from the age of 12. Id never played online ever because i knew it was random and with my addiction to awp's i knew what could easily happen. But after about 4-5 years of online poker i had a dabble on the casino side, after all, it was always there - a button on the bottom of the screen while playing poker... and it started to take over  . But i went a good 4 years refusing to have one spin! ;)

Real player from the childhood) At all, this is really good topic to think about. I have a little experience in playing poker and I do it just for my self, not to earn. It was interesting for me to read different thoughts.
