The protest is aimed at the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate.

"If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the foundation said.

They can't even get UIGEA to work effectively, they are going to have the same problems with SOPA.

Both are trying to attack the supply, but to nothing to satisfy demand through the introduction of approved channels.

The US administration was screaming about China imposing censorship of the internet because it was a threat to THEIR establishment. The US establishment is built on different principles, so SOPA is no different to the great firewall of China in that respect, even though different parts of the internet are targetted.

Incidentally, whilst condemning China for censoring the news, the big US corporations actually block ME here in the UK from accessing US news content. I often get "country blocked" when fellow US members here try to share news stories from the US with others in the forum. This is NOT about entertainment content being blocked such as movies and US TV series, it is the damn NEWS. This is the actions of a hypocrite, and unlikely to garner international support for the US stance on China's blocking of parts of the internet.

The US goes to some lengths to circumvent the Chinese blocks, so what if the Chinese decide to retaliate by undermining SOPA in a way that gives the US no means to stop them. The Chinese also have an argument that they are no longer the only country censoring the internet "in the national interest", and that they are not doing anything different from anybody else.

The other case where supply is attacked, with little done to redirect demand, is the international war on drugs. THis has even lead to some arguing for an end to this fight, and opening legitimate supply channels that the illicit ones cannot compete with, thus removing this source of income from the syndicates, which then removes their motive to continue supplying.

SOPA will probably end up harming the legitimate parts of the internet the most, even the government. I read that one consequence of SOPA is that many security implementations intended to protect servers from hackers will be rendered illegal, and will have to be pulled and redesigned, possibly working less effectively as a result. This will result in hackers having an easier time, even if times are tougher for the pirate websites.

MOST internet piracy will continue, as it does NOT rely on DNS to make it's interconnections. It will APPEAR to lessen though, as the internet will be purged of most visible signs of it. It will then be harder to monitor and quantify, and make life EASIER for the hardened pirates. The software clients needed will switch to being distributed by "word of mouth" rather than being freely available for download.
