Today, touches many Australian and New Zealand families.
I myself had 2 grandfathers who fought in World War II, one didn't live very long after his return and one who was a pow and had his leg amputated due to a bullet wound.
He used to always tell us the story of how his friend had made a wooden leg for him with nothing but a lathe and chisel, till the day he died he used that leg.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
