Law to block gambling sites in Quebec making progress

"She said problem gambling is a health issue which falls under provincial jurisdiction.
"Loto-Quebec and our government have constitutional competence and the responsibility to act to protect citizens by offering regulated, responsible, honest and secure gambling.""

Its only a health issue when others offer gambling services. So this is how they will bypass the federal law. They might as well just say the truth cuz it's blatant. Everyone knows it and everyone sees it. Why are they trying to disguise it as a health issue. It's a money grab and they are getting rid of the competition. That's the truth.

Instead of doing what normal companies do in a free market. Offer a better service. Offer a better site. Do it better than the competition that is out there and maybe just maybe your numbers will go up. They will do it the way state run countries do. Eliminate a free market. What is next on the list. French only sites? no more Amazon for us cuz our own Quebec bookstores are doing badly. What is next?

I hate this government and those that came before it. This is something we'd expect from the Chinese or Russian governments.

So pathetic. But, that is par for the course in Quebec/Ontario. Although I think you guys have it worse in Quebec. At least we have half decent land casinos here in Ontario.

We are next guys. Just wait and see. To tell you the truth, they would probably be doing me a favour.

Personal freedoms are a dying breed and things will surely get worse in this day and age. People imagine themselves to be living in an enlightened age but individuality is being eroded at a rate of knots and governments are taking control of every aspect of our lives.

But on certain issues I can almost understand some type of regulation, even if enforced. When it comes to gambling, anything to deter and piss people off enough to limit their choices can almost be viewed as positive. If this bill is passed in Quebec then surely other places will follow in time.

I personally think there are way too many online casinos and that can be off-putting too.

Envisage just a handful of online casinos, and one can only play Starburst though. That'd be hell on earth

Where there is money to be made, there will be govt involvement, this is a given. We have seen this with the US situation and the use of the Safe Port Act in 2006 to get the UIGEA through. We have the Point of Consumption Tax in the UK and other markets continue to close the net on online gaming.

Indeed, as someone that has given up smoking thanks to ECigarettes or Vaping, the EU have the Tobacco Product Directive which goes live next month. Which in short, will over regulate the vaping industry to such an extent, that many businesses will be forced literally out of business. There are rumours too that taxes will rise steeply.

Where there is money to be made, there is over regulation. Because at the end of the day, our governments want a big slice of the pie. It sucks!

Oh yes. I was going to go to Vape Jam. Gutted it crept up on me too quickly. Phil Busardo, Grimm Green, Todd and Dimitri were also there :(

I do my own coils and have a good selection of mods, but don't use drippers.

Sadly, I have to agree with you. I love gambling but the easy access to it can lead to out of control gaming at times for me.

I can't see Kathleen Wynne doing it, though. She's too busy covering up her corruption.

I guess it should be the casino sites that should put restriction into, since we all know for a fact that it is easy to enter a gambling site. As for the rules well its not just in Quebec a lot of countries are having a problem with the legalization of online gambling.

I have to agree that this appears to be nothing more than an attempt to neutralise competition so that the provincial government's Espace Jeux site can better perform (without having to compete with genuine offers).

In fact several reported comments from the provincial parliament over the past two or more years underline the need to block competitive sites so that Espace can prosper.

Having followed the progress of Bill 74 and the political discussions surrounding it, I'm surprised that CTV is airing this now, as I don't see any really new developments in a story that has been dragging on for some time.

The government has already butted heads with some of the ISPs on it's apparent intention to force them to censor the internet by blocking websites, and Net Neutrality and freedom of speech organisations have threatened to challenge the passage of any legislation.

Still, it's always good to read again the reasons for not doing this, albeit through previously expressed opinions by respected experts.

Quebec government is appealing the ruling. Do we have to wait for months or years for the supreme court ruling and will this mean Netent and other providers that currently do not allow Canadians will wait for the final ruling before entering Canada again?

Don't quote me on this, but I dont think Quebec's ruling has no presidency on how other provinces licence online gaming. For Netent to come back to Canada, it could do without Quebec. I think the bigger picture is our demographics and lack of players vs cost comparative. We may be a huge country land mass, but population wise, we are small. Now if we joined with Russia,  I noticeably left our other border country out. We couldn't afford the tariffs :)

Now i knew how big Canada was but had never realised just how small a population it had till your post.

So had to google it.

Seriously when they talk about over population in the world and you have such a huge country with so few people in it. Lol open your borders and let another hundred million or so in:D.

You will still be under populated :eek2:

 I know. Our Prime Minister is trying his hardest to get population going. No one is having babies anymore.

Really? I think too many are having babies and not even planning and yes we are over populated. :)
Lol. Ok. Our population is 36.29 million (2016). Just under the size of California. And no, we aren't having a lot of babies. If you go look at the stats. I'm too tired right now, but the last that I looked it had fallen by over 20% in the last 10 years. Our land mass expands from Greenland, Russia to the US. That is a HUGE land mass. So that means there is huge un-populated areas. You know with all that mind boggling resources we have, we could be a very self sufficient country. But because most of the area is inhabitable, and we dont have the money or population to make it accessible, we lose out :(

i totally agree with you, with the amount of money that burn out for governmental purposes could have been spent to inhabit and modernize new areas for people to settle in at and keep the population growing. Idk if you may do anything that might have had an influence to the governement
