Hi,

We were told by our provider that our current router and/or modem is almost obsolete.

We got a new one. It is an all-in-one, modem/router 'Arris model tg862g

But, it is a reconditioned one and it didn't come with instructions.

I looked at their website, not an "old lady user friendly" site, in my opinion

anyway.

One of our sons says we have to give some kind of number off of it to the

provider.

Is this correct and does anyone here know of a pc illiterate direction?

I am guessing that you purchased your own and did not get one from your ISP. If you have it all set-up and working without any issue great. I know that my ISP did not need any info from me when I replaced my wireless router last year(not that I asked them if they needed anything :)), but I guess everyone is unique. It can't hurt to make a quick phone call and ask them.

Correct, we didn't want to pay RENT on the stupid thing, which is what comcast will do.

No, I am just chicken to try to hook it up. Right now the router and modem are separate pieces.

The new one is all-in-one. Meaning the same wires/plugs that went into 2 units, now has to go into one.

If you cant google search to find set-up instructions you may want to consider returning it for a new on with directions. There is some minor set-up involved and you will want to password protect your wireless. I like NetGear or Linksys brand, but there are a lot to pick from.

You could also call Comcast and just play dumb and get them to talk you through setting it up. Tell them you bought a new one and need help. If they tell you they rent them, just act like you did not know that. Too late you already bought one. You do pay for their service and if you mention Verizon FIOS, I'm sure they will be more than willing to help. :)

This is a great idea.

Usually, it's not a good idea to buy a "all-in-one" modem/router but since you are "an old lady" this probably does not matter.

If you can't find the instructions then I think you have two options:
1. Call your ISP and get them to help.
2. Return the device and buy another with instructions.

The former will probably be hard as the ISP have their own policies to not help you with a third party device (since they don't want to break yours nor want their business to go elsewhere) so the latter is probably your only bet. Unless you have some tech-saavy children... then I'm sure they can help you out.

Best of luck to you!
