What is that protocol all about and why can't a reciprocal touch be given? Just wondering why the London press is so abuzz about this (harmless) contact.

What is that protocol all about and why can't a reciprocal touch be given? Just wondering why the London press is so abuzz about this (harmless) contact.
I think it's not about the touch, it's about "touch the Queen"
Maybe it looks too unceremoniously, especcially when it comes to Queen.
BTW, can you easily touch your President?

I am sure this has happened before. Royal protocol dates back to when the monarch ruled with absolute power, and were seen almost as "gods". From what I understand, there are many odd protocols, such as not initiating conversation with the Queen, but it is OK to respond once spoken to - or always leaving the presence of a ruling monarch walking backwards facing them, rather than turning one's back and walking forward, which is seen as an insult.
This protocol is mainly reserved for public events, and is partly ceremonial. In private, the Queen is more "easy going", but of course does not expect this to be bandied about in the press.
I think the earlier case was about someone laying a guiding, or steering, hand on the Queen, seen as an assertion that they are placing themselves above the Queen, and in public. The press are "all over" such things, since they have Royal correspondents, who know that a social gaffe has been committed.
Normally, prior to meeting the Queen, or any other major Royal, a meeting with a palace official should be arranged in order to clarify issues of ceremony or protocol, so that public social gaffes can be avoided.
