Do bookies want bets?

Went to my local bookies on Sat to put a bet on Eurovision. before i finished asking the price the staff use the machine... i politely said as im speaking to a human i rather continue speaking to them. long story short the counter staff said that they would have to fill in a lot of paperwork if i did not process my bet via the machine. They point blankly refused to accept my bet over the counter
Is this normal??

It's similar to what happened in the high street banks a while back, most of the counter staff were replaced by automated machines in my barclays, when you'd queue to be served by a person somebody would come up to you and suggest you use the machines instead. So the staff are being forced to promote something that will in the end see most of them lose their jobs...strange world we live in.

The last time I placed a bet in the bookies for the mighty sum of £1 on portsmouth to beat arsenal away [yeah laughable I know, that's why my football tipping career came to an abrupt end ] the lady had to ask the manager if it was alright for them to take the bet, as if I might have some insider knowledge on a rigged outcome and it was a risky thing for them to proceed

All depends. The machine like online has access to a lot more events right off and has the current updating of prices whereas for specialty events and in play events you will find the staff have to check the price and by the time they get it it may have changed or bett8ng be suspended so at times using the machine would be in both the staffs and your best interest.

But if the event was not in play and the prices were readily available in the shop then it was plain laziness on the staff members behalf.

Probably relatively new and didn’t know how to access it. You don’t have to be that bright nowadays to work in or even manage a bookies. It’s all done for them by machines, bets are settled automatically. If the system crashed none of them would have a clue. You’d probably have to wait until it was up and running again to be paid out on £1 on a 9/2 shot.

Snorky you've got connections to the bookie world, it's kind of a uniquely british institution [if that's the right word] the interesting characters who frequent these places, you see all life in a bookies, you can find out a lot about the state of the country, society wise. Did you watch that bbc documentary series a while back, britain at the bookies, focusing on coral?

Be a shame to see them gone but once the horse racing loses popularity in the coming generations I can see more closures, mid week football etc helps but you can do it all online. However, just thinking,if online gambling becomes more difficult with sows and kyc hassle then maybe the bookie shop's business will experience an upturn?

Possibly so the trouble is when FOBTS came around and bookies realised the potential, all their attention was diverted to promoting that side of the business. Fast forward 20 years and you have bred a generation of gamblers that don’t know or have grown up with virtually nothing else.

The downturn in revenue from horse racing over the last 20 years I would imagine has been enormous. Back in the 70s/80s it was an institution and prior to that it was one of the only forms of entertainment/gambling the working man had. Now everything else has become so accessible as in online casinos. Dress code in B+M casinos becoming far less stringent (my regular casino wouldn’t have 50% of its customers if this wasn’t so). Not saying that’s a bad thing it’s how times have changed.

What the big name bookies have to remember is that a vast number of their branches were only opened to to enable them to exploit the potential of FOBTS and they did so to the absolute max.

If there had been proper regulations and official governing bodies in place from the outset. They wouldn’t be in the situation they are in now. IMO something should have been done long ago but of course locking the stable door after the horse has bolted is what has happened. The fact the max bet on roulette was reduced from £100 to £2 is beyond drastic which tells you it was way to late.

I personally would like to know the amount of SEs in betting shops compared to online casino (pro rats). It would I am sure make for interesting reading.

By the way I didn’t see that documentary, wish I had but I know one thing, get a good betting shop full of the old characters and an afternoons entertainment was second to none. The sharp wit, humour and sarcasm was simply amazing. I miss those days badly.
