Dell Factory Restore on Inspiron Laptop

We have two Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptops, both with Vista.
My question is this; I can only find one set of restore disks and I don't know which laptop they belong to, as the laptops are almost identical does it matter if I use the restore disks to restore the factory settings of the laptop that the disks may not have been originally packaged with? One laptop keeps blue screening and I wanted to try a reinstall of the OS from disk as it blue screens when trying to restore from the harddrive. Both laptops were purchased in 2008.

Often the restore disk is for a 'series' of computers.

I'd check the disc- often they have some information on them for which computer/Serial numbers/Group of products that is for.

As long as you get windows in there and still have the product keys you should, at least, be able to get it to boot if they're in the same 'series'.

If not, you might need to check in both (if both require it), or see if you can't perhaps find a bootable OS (There are a number of 'bootable OSes, mostly Linux builds) that can run right from the CD player. Many of them are very similar to Windows in GUI (Graphical User Interface),

Those are /great/ for troubleshooting, I've found. You'll know your computer isn't a fancy paperweight, at least! :)
The issue with those are you have to find one that'll work for your machine. It could take some time searching the internet. But, all of the builds have forums- and those folks could help you set it up a lot better than I.

If the products are registered, you could also contact Dell to see if they can help you- They may sell the restore discs if you require them, but you /will/ pay a premium (If they're even around). Particularly if you are outside any kind of service contract with them. :(

Hopefully, some of this helps!

Edit: If both are 1525s, and the only difference is minor hardware (Say, like Memory. Something that doesn't require a 'driver' to run.) They should work out for you.

Surasanji, thank you for the info and ideas you posted. I just looked at support.Dell dot com to view the service configurations and the only difference I'm noticing is that one processor is a T2370 and other is a T2390.

I did contact Dell but was told I needed to fill out a retail/ownership tranfer - (which I have done today) but it can take take up to 15 working days for Dell to list me and not Best Buy - the retailer, as the owner. I've never needed the MS Windows key for either laptop and hadn't even considered that potential problem. Due to the product key issue I may have to wait for Dell afterall.

Again thank you!

Check the bottom of the laptops. There may be product keys there. If you have other documentation, its usually some kind of sticker. :)

The CPUs being different could mean the disk might not be correct- I'd email support and ask them directly if the restore disk on model A will work and fix model B. Its the quickest way to get that particular knowledge, I feel.

And its my pleasure to help! :D That's what we're all here to do, right? :p

Surasanji, you're awesome! The Dell/MS stickers are on the bottom of both... I'm surprised at the relief finding the product keys has provided, the thought that I'm might not have them was giving me a headache.

pobeda you have a pm.

Since both laptops are Inspiron 1525 the disks should work fine on both.

The only difference could be a different driver needed for different types of chipsets, but that is not a problem in this case - the T2370 and T2390 are both from the same series of Dual-Core Pentiums so they would use the same driver. So the 2 laptops are virtually 100% compatible with each other.

There should be no problem using the disks. But if the laptop blows up, I deny any responsibility :)
