Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

Hmm.. Well.. I don't exactly remember what the WHO told us end of january but this doesn't help.

"The world should have responded to the coronavirus pandemic a month or two ago, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a news briefing in Geneva today."

If I remember rightly, the WHO were against more draconian action across Europe earlier on due to the economic impacts they would cause.

Please do not post stuff without backing it up with factual information. This only leads to unnecessary rumours. FYI, the first public statement from the WHO was on 10th Jan 2020. A first more serious warning as the situation developed in China was posted on 24th Jan 2020:

Pretty sure I read something on a well respected site that said the WHO warned against taking too severe action due to impacts on the economy- but if I'm mistaken then I'm mistaken. It was a fair few weeks ago.

At the beginning, everyone would have been against taking too severe action. The global supply chain economy we have today is rather sensitive to restrictions.

However, I think it's fair to say that many countries waited too long because by the time it became known at end of Jan 2020, you had already weeks, if not months, of spreaders from Wuhan and those visiting the region travelling back and forth all around the world (e.g. you can google how many conferences/trade shows they had in Nov/Dec/Jan). What I think contributed to the delay is that Wuhan is/was not exactly known to many although it is a major hub in China, so many thought "oh, a few sick people in an unknown city in China is no biggie, might be just the flu".

What is apparent though is that some countries did not take action as early as they should have. E.g. Germany still held their big carnival events at the beginning of Feb, the perfect spreading environment, you could call it a feast for the virus. :D

Venice also holds carnival, add Chinese tourists to that mix and it's not that difficult to see why the situation in Northern Italy is so dire.

In the Netherlands the situation is the most severe in Brabant, also known for its big carnival events.

And ofcourse around the carnival period schools in Europe have holidays so people travel to the ski resorts in France, Austria, Italy,... making it the perfect breeding ground to start an epidemy.

In Hong Kong there were a number of infections in LAN KWAI FONG, a place where there are plenty of bars and which is a get-together place for many foreigners. As such, the government suggests the banning of alcohol sales in these pubs/restaurants. The pub owners offered a counter proposal ie to close the pubs for 2 weeks but the government must pay for their ents and staff salaries during that period. We really live in strange times.

This morning i went to my local shop at opening time and grabbed some stuff and started at the till. There are 3 queued behind me and whilst my corner shop pal, Provode (not sure if the spellings right) is processing the stuff one of the people behind interrupts me half way talking by shouting 'how much is a lighter mate'.

Long story short he jumped queue claiming he had to get a train to which i replied - there are no trains and i am being served at the minute if he wants to wait, he says he cant and Provode, the wally, gives him a lighter whilst the guy throws pennies on the counter while i can smell his breath and the tries justifying his intrusion to me.

Then when i say I have kids at home waiting and we all have to wait he says 'well you better get home then' as he is leaving the shop. Like a child who dares to say something and then runs. Not a major incident but i need to vent.

Normally i would object to anybody throwing their weight around. I cannot stand bullies, my pet hate. In this instant i was left fuming and literally had to stop myself from doing something he would regret. Due to the current situation he broke social distancing rules and imposed himself on me and the others around him.

I am glad i kept my cool. With my Nan passing, my kids getting cabin fever, not to mention all the other crap i deal with from the ex and now a goon thinks he can push in and get in my face with a bullshit story for an 80p lighter.

Patience is definitely a virtue.

Rant over, thanks :)

What a douchebag. He pissed me off just from reading about him. You made the right choice. He’s not worth getting sick over.

Sounds a bit like some of the shops round here - every time i go to one in particular just down the road it's like being flanked by scumbags to the entrance. Normally it's do you have a fag? Lend us 50p mate? Buy me foil? And that's before you get into the place to be encountered with yet more reprobates.

Thanks, yes violence is never really a solution but bullies dont seem to understand any other form of punishment.

I am not an inherently violent man but he made my blood boil.

Sounds like the same sort of retard that tailgates, gladly putting other people at risk of harm because they are dumbass, moronic, mouth breathers. Bamber you did well to limit your involvement with him, they're nothing but trouble and want to draw you into reacting

The shopkeeper was a wally but they do get intimidated by them as well, and a bit of a sitting duck when it comes to any retaliation or consequences.

Anyone reading this outside of britain maybe scratching their head, but a public difference of opinion with a yobbo here can seriously escalate to violence on another level. [even worse if there are two or more together]

Oh boy, our PM does not know what to do. He said only 30 min at the hairdressers is allowed :eek2:
He extended it since

Well I hope everyone is doing well and staying at home and keeping safe. Just wanted to say that I have been really struggling with anxiety attacks even more the last few days as this is getting worse and worse. I am worried for my dad and brother who is Diabetic and my brother is not self isolating and was still going to work.

My dad and brother live together, so I worried that my brother could pass it onto my dad. My brother and dad are both in that vulnerable group category, but yet they seem to not be taking this seriously what so ever. It angers me soo much. As this went on and as time as gone by the seriousness of the situation has certainly changed somewhat to what it started out to be like in China.

But now it is getting far more serious and the risk and loss of life to vulnerable groups and the elderly or in some cases healthy younger people. We all just need to stay at home to stay safe and ALIVE. I mean I know we still need to get food etc etc. I will be 100% making sure I am 5 metres away from anyone when I go shopping. If an isle has customers in, I will wait until the isle clears until I go down it. That is if that isle even has food on those shelves!

I hope that everyone stays well and safe and please stay at home and only go out if you need food and if you are at risk then get someone else to get the food for you and do not go out at all. We all have to get through this together. I have a weakened immune system but I have not got anyone who could go shopping for me, but with my IBS issues and other issues I have, I am really fussy about best by dates on food items. So I always like to go shopping myself to make sure I get the best dates I can get on the food.

Also loved that MEME above with the haircut :D great one..........

Remember it will get sorted out eventually, but now is the the time to be most vigilatant.
Got to be impressed by the amount of resources being thown at it here in the UK and elswhere,
from converting buildings to hospitals, ventilators being produced in large quantities, and hopefully
testing kits becoming widely available, also the amount of volunteers signing up shows there are still
a lot of caring people in the country.Just hang in there, do the right thing and it will all be over before
the summer.

Russia has recently (early March) had to be intercepted by RAF aircraft to force Russian fighter aircraft away from entering British air space in Scotland.

Now seven Russian ships have entered British waters around the UK and are under surveillance by the Royal Navy as well as being supported by helicopters to watch their every move.

At a time when the country is in crisis with the Coronavirus, this was obviously planned - what next?

That game's been going on for 50+ years now. The English Electric Lightning was developed back then (the first fighter plane that could climb at the speed of sound) to get to them in few minutes - they just test our defences every now and again. UK and US jets used to do this taking off from Turkey and skirt Russian airspace and ask the Swedes and Norwegians about submarine and naval shenanigans too. Remember the 1970's and the Russian 'trawlers' in the English Channel....

How was the shelves looking? Was they pretty full? Even the chilled fridges sections?

I didn't pay attention to the frozen food but shelves with rice, pasta, honey and toilet paper were empty. But water, fruit, vegetables and different types of meat were enough.

Realized that I forget to buy water... So went back but could not get in; they put barriers and there was around 70 meters queue of people standing 2m apart and waiting outside to get in. Seems like they started to let a few people in at a time. The similar thing happens at Boots as well.

Ok thanks for letting me know, I was not asking about frozen. I do not buy frozen food. I buy most food from the chilled section meaning the fridges and not freezers :)

I have friends who chose to go to work. There has been a whole range of reactions and i can only blame the government for not delivering the message correctly or enforcing when they should.

As for shopping have you looked at nextdoor.co.uk? Its a local community website. You put in your postcode and it connects you with neighbours. there have been a few volunteers doing shopping trips for people more vulnerable. Even if your not it makes sense for one to go rather than everyone. Take a look it there may be a friendly neighbour who can help.

I know your fussy but this may alleviate some anxiety.

Also, my friend suffers with Colitis quite bad. 2 things that worked - Charcoal tablets and CBD Oil (Cannabis oil).

He sticks with the CBD now and says it works wonders. Ive heard some amazing stories about that stuff.

Thanks I will look into that site and the tips you said.. :)

Feeling alot better today, very sore around the back and few pains.
More energy and slightly more hungry lol
Wasn't great last night but feel a lot better today. Do I have corona? God's knows.
Don t get unwell normally so I got a feeling this is it but can't guarantee it.

If you can't guarantee it better quarantine it!

How's that for a slogan? Jokes aside to you and all dear members here: i hope everybody will be o.k., and i really hope this situation will blow over soon. It's quite amazing how easily our day to day lives can be turned upside down by a thing like this virus...

At the very least hope some of the advise that has been given to the general public about social distancing and personal hygiene will stick, and become somwhat of a new norm, as i have seen enough bad habits from the general public (specifically younger peeps) to worry me...

Thanks for the laughs in this and the other thread: your memes and jokes kept me smiling the past week!

@ternur , if this wasn’t what you were kicked out of heaven to help with, I don’t know what

An appeal has been launched in the Czech Republic to "save" the equivalent of 1,305,552 pints of craft beer that will go off "within weeks" if it is not drunk.

The beer is languishing undrunk in barrels in 32 craft breweries across the country. All pubs and restaurants are closed to the public (they can serve through hatches) but customers can buy direct from breweries.

Pale lager as we know it was invented in the Czech city of Pilsen in 1842. The Czech Republic has the highest per capita beer consumption in the world.

What a morning, fun fun fun trying to get through to the doctor, my HR calls and it all depends if I am going to be off or not, Can't get tested as I don't work with vulnerable people and not "essential" in their eyes even though I am classified as essential which means got to go back to work unless I get worse or get a fever than I will be off for 14 days.

We are still at "low risk" here so can't really do anything, So I could have it but nobody really cares as I don't have a fever or sound that bad. We just got starting Monday a $ 2-hour raise only for a maximum of 40 hours a week, so after deductions maybe $60 a week if I am lucky and have lost more than that, I would be happier about it but they caved to the pressure to do it.

Live music this summer is pretty much gone. And now beer is about to go bad!? This is the definition of fresh hell in the pandemic world

Only been a week but I got this social distancing down!

Only the 11 or so to go, then I can be some sort of Recluse Demigod

Now if you add an evil riff and take the vocals down a notch, that'd make a fairly nice metal song.

Not everything in life is Rock & Roll you know sir

My daughter is home doing her assignments for Manchester U. They are still having the students do their work yet Liverpool is closed and students there have been given a pass for this term. Disgruntled girl here.

Meanwhile in Ireland:

Just heard lots of cheering at 20:00 UK time.

Lots of people at their front doors clapping and cheering - i thought lockdown had been lifted or something - turns out its in support of the NHS - possibly the finest creation of the UK (closely followed by the Mini and Tinternet).

Gave a nice feeling of community spirit not felt for a while.

Yea my daughter stood at front door clapping and all the neighbours were at theirs clapping too . She recorded it. Really loud and as you say a great sense of community.

We had fireworks here. Bloody ridiculous, poor Sox wasn’t amused.
All credit to the NHS staff however.

Took 7 different kinds/flavors, and 3 of the original.
Also restocked on baking ingredients.
All set for the weekend now.
We get them on the rigs mate. They charge us a fortune for them.
My fav is the orange one.

Growing up i remember our next door neighbours, Aunty Barbara and Uncle Doug, would leave their key in the front door when they got up and take it in when they went to bed lol.

Didnt find out they were unrelated until i was about 10.......i miss decent community spirit.

Got one i had not tried before aswell.
Oreo-cookie flavored.
Just tried it, and it tasted like crap.
Not even chocolate can make those cookies edible.
And since its chocolate i cant even feed it to the dog.

In the bin.

Oreo is a cool cookie. Dipped in Baileys.
