Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

You could always move to the US. The Chosen One said he will have a vaccine soon and we know that he warmly welcomes immigrants from Scandinavian countries. Don't forget though to bring the raking tools with you as you might be asked to rake some forests.
He will personally make sure you will be vaccinated latest by end of January 2021! View attachment 130350

EDIT: And don't forget to bring $1 million with you to pay for the vaccine. You know, the Chosen One's friends at the poor pharma companies need to make at least a little profit.
Ok, i think you have dragged the name "chosen one" thru the dirt just about enough now.
Have you never watched "Kung pow: Enter the fist"?
The chosen one bears a mark thats easy to spot.

Its a pretty great movie.
They used a finished movie and just dubbed it and added a bunch of stuff with cgi.
Main charachter is not in the real thing.

"Written, directed by and starring Steve Oedekerk, it uses footage from the 1976 Hong Kong martial arts film Tiger & Crane Fists (also called Savage Killers), along with new footage shot by Oedekerk, to create an original, unrelated plot. "

I must see that movie! My kind of stupid.

Just read a news headline 'What is the UK's 'lockdown roadmap' - how will restrictions be lifted'.

I didnt bother reading as yesterday, in Essex, it seemed the public lifted it.

Yesterday was like normality for cars on the road and and people on the streets.

The only strange thing that really seemed out of place was the kids and me wearing masks in the shop.

Before any proven vaccine emerges, please take care of yourselves through the twin actions of face mask-wearing and social distancing. Of course people must adhere to these strictly for a short period of time to see tangible results. Hong Kong was among the first to record infections, expets said we were already facing a mini-outbreak in February and with the dreaded benefit of SARS experience, the whole population of 7+ million panicked and scrambled for face masks, stayed indoors and our medical workers went on strike to force the government to close all borders. The government refused and reluctantly placed everybody coming in on quarantine. With the warmer weather we are witnessing no local infections for 15 days andonly a couple of imported infections from our own people returning from the UK and Pakistan. I really think social distancing and mask-wearing works so please try to adopt these measures in addition to other hygiene measures. Keep safe guys and keep spinning away.

Not our finest hour :(
I hate to be mean but our experience with SARS made us panic and we had to discard temporarily our normal ways of life for many days and if people want to be safe they have to bite the bullet and refrain from partaking in social activities till the virus chain is broken. I would have loved the Premier League to rsume but that would be too selfish of me.

Oh I agree totally but we are far too laid back here people do as they wish with very little consequence from authorities. The result is as at today 30k dead

30k dead really is not a lot in the grand scheme of things. And at what price this lockdown and destroying of our economy, years and years of hardship our coming our way, big time problems ahead that will make covid seem like nothing.

What an ignorant comment.

How many more casualties would there of been if we had not implemented measures to contain the virus?.

What number of deaths are you ok with, just to protect our economy?

Any hardship coming is the price to pay for protecting ones family and the population in general.

You carry on just thinking of yourself, utter selfishness.

The lockdown is nothing, the economy is nothing, only life matters, there are probably a million people
affected and grieving for those deaths.Worry about your spoilt lifestyle when all this over, not now.

Im honestly not thinking of myself, im thinking everyones futures. This loss of the economy will kill many more people than the virus will trust me.

So how would you off handled the situation then?.

Just except fatalities as collateral damage, by letting the virus spread and spread until the NHS collapsed and the country fell into a complete cluster feck ?.

Do you not think the economy would of ended up in a much worse state than anything we are looking at now?.

With the death toll multiple times greater than we are already at.

But I guess in your world the death toll is not important in the grand scale of things, aslong as you can enjoy a normal life

I dont want to say this but this is the harsh reality for me.

Our government are doing nothing less than putting money before our lives.

They are not the only ones. All around the world pharmaceutical corporations embroidered into economies are fighting tooth and nail to be the ones that offer the vaccine.

In a time when politics should be pushed aside it is ever present and sacrificing lives to line somebodies pockets.

It will come to a point and should come to a point when these murderers should be dragged from their castles and held accountable.

Edit: Billions being thrown around and to what effect???

Peace out all....... ive said enough i think :)

The problem is that if you look at say Sweden, it appears that whilst they handled things differently with less damage to their economy because of not so strict restrictions, the number of cases per 1 million people is lower.

I don't think there is a perfect answer to the question how it should have been dealt with taking everything into consideration.

Sweden is almost twice the size of uk, and has only 10 million people compared to 60.
We are more spread out here, making social distancing easy peasy.

A pub / terrace is a pub / terrace whether that be in the UK or Sweden. Whilst you Swedes can enjoy a (expensive!!) beer down the pub, we can't.

It's very bad but it can get much worse as we still have essential services, medical, police, fire, trash collection, power, food, fuel, etc..

True.
Guess thats what those crazy southerners are doing to get so many cases there.
All the cool people live in the north! Right @Tirilej

The discussion between saving people and saving the economy or what is the very thin line in which we try to do both is an almost impossible one because there are such strong opinions on both sides. Just have a look at some comments in this thread.

When you go into the argument that additional loss of life is unacceptable we'll never get to open up, the virus is amongst us and won't just disappear. We'll have to live with it for the time being until there is a vaccine, possibly even until it mutates and is less lethal when they don't manage to find a vaccine.

The thin line I'm talking of is a trade off between amount of lives lost versus keeping the world running whilst also still being able to go out for a movie or a beer. These numbers are being crunched by every country: what amount is deemed acceptable? When can we loosen measures? When do we have to put them in place again?

Or are there people here who think it's possible we all stay home, businesses stay closed and we don't get any form of outside entertainment anymore until we get rid of this? That's just lalaland. It would kill our economy plain and simple.

Yet despite those crazy southerners getting pissed in the pubs, the infection rate is lower in Sweden than the UK that has similar statistics where the densely populated areas are more affected than the lesser ones.

I can see where dealer wins is kind of coming from if you are to compare Sweden against the UK.

Maybe some good news for once. A German institute found antibodies that would dock onto the virus to stop it from multiplying itself. This would not be a vaccine, but for treatment. It would stop an infection pretty instantly.

The article in German:

Google Translate of the main part:

Cicin-Sain and his team said the report analyzed 6,000 different man-made antibodies. The researchers found more than 750 antibodies that dock with the coronavirus - a prerequisite for successfully fighting the pathogen. Now the antibodies are tested for their effectiveness on cell cultures.

The aim of the scientists is not a vaccination but a drug to treat seriously ill corona patients acutely: "The principle of action with which we work is the so-called passive immunization," said Stefan Dübel from the Technical University of Braunschweig. "The effect is immediate: the antibodies take the potential away from the virus."

First treatments in autumn?

The search for the best antibody candidate for a later drug should continue until mid-June, said Thomas Schirrmann of the biotech company Yumab involved in the project. Then the favorites had to be put through their paces and the development prepared for clinical practice. "Our vision is that the first corona patients will be treated with the drug in the fall," said Schirrmacher.

On the death toll , based on WHO's experts, the fatality rate is quite low ie less than 1.5% with other experts touting it as somewhere between 0.1-0.3%. With more than 3.7 million infections worldwide and 258k deaths and 2 million active cases the figures do not stand up to scrutiny. The sample size is huge and the fatality rate, even discounting various factors, eg. the elderly, different medical facilities, people with diabetes, high blood pressure etc. I cannot see the fatality rate being below 3% even for healthy and young people. So please take good care of yourselves. I am doing just that and getting used to it until a vaccine emerges.

Are you really confident about a vaccine? How long have people been searching for one against coronaviruses? And what level of protection will be acceptable for you? 30%, 50%, 70%?

Not even the standard flu shots are 100%, the current one is protecting you against the types from last and previous years. This year's mutations are not included, that will be then done for next year etc etc.

Personally, I think a treatment will emerge earlier, taking the danger away from having people die from it.

I wish that was true, but imagine how boring the world would have been if that was the case :p

You're a cool guy though. I believe that you in some way have helped changing this forum in to be a really nice and fun place to visit again. Even that serious @ternur have turned in to a fun person. Who would have thought
Or it's the fact that bitchy me stopped arguing with people :)
I just wanted to take this chance to say thank you to everyone that help keeping the spirit up in here

I had a call from my daughter this morning. She was feeling really sick and wanted me to pick up my granddaughter. I will of course do that and spend a few hours outside playing until the father comes home from work. She still have the newborn at home. Fingers crossed it's nothing more serious than a normal cold.

Watching PM Question Time and Boris Johnson in fine form, finding an appreciative group of MPs in attendance. There's about 7 people present.

The rest are video-linking their questions, but in that "Raaa Raaaa" Houses of Parliament tone  as though they were there. They even maintain that back-bench grimmace when asking the PM

BUT he has indicated he wants to implement 200,000 tests a day, by the end of the month

Also, admissions of regret of the handling

Just saw this ..yes the poster is American but food for thought.

"For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1900.
When you are 14, World War I starts and ends on your 18th birthday with 22 million people killed.

Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until you are 20. Fifty million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million.

When you're 29, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, global GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy.

When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet.
When you're 41, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war and the Holocaust kills six million.

At 50, the Korean War starts, and five million perish.

At 55 the Vietnam War begins, and it doesn’t end for 20 years. Four million people die in that conflict.

Approaching your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, could well have ended. Great leaders prevented that from happening.

As you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends.

Think of everyone on the planet who was born in 1900. How did they survive all of that?

A kid in 1985 didn’t think their 85-year-old grandparent understood how hard school was. Yet those grandparents survived through everything listed above.

Perspective is an amazing art. Let’s try and keep things in perspective.

Let’s be smart, help each other out, and we will get through all of this."

Dont worry, Ternur is still as serious as ever.
Atleast when we are talking about Japanese metal bands and beer.

Hope your daughter gets better soon.
If the child shows signs of the virus, i suggest trapping it with a chair or a small table.
This may seem risky, but it is in fact very rare that the chair/table gets any damage at all.
Be safe!

Good to hear from you @Tirilej. I agree with you, the young padawan has brought much joy to this community.

For the record, I've always been fun, I just warm up to things in a slow manner (took about 14 years here). Or the reason is that I made friends with an old friend after so many years (beer). :p

Stay safe

Hai (I might be atm). Not just Japanese metal bands, metal music in general. And not just beer, alcohol in general. Some things are just sacred. I got my priorities straight. I've seen the (star)light and I will not turn back.

Kanpai, skål :drink:and happiness to everyone.

Sounds neat.
But since Bill Gates is involved i assume its all part of some evil plot to take over mankind. :)
Its reassuring to see him so upset that the worlds economy is falling apart. Its also good to see that he has managed to get over his rocking back and forward under pressure :)

2020060606 hmm

Bill's really enjoying the idea of the western world economies on their knees, more chance of people being desperate to adopt his 'solution'.

I can't quite put into words what is going on in sweden with some of their hipsters thinking its cool and groovy to get chipped, it's nearly always the youth that want to be early adopters, bit of peer pressure and bob's your uncle everyone is 'chipped', have they really thought about it deeply, is it going to make them happier in the long term to be connected to a system of social/behaviour control and reduced freedom/flexibility ? I wonder if the japanese are going for it too, they love technology and high tech things as well

The reduced freedom&flexibility comes from where?

The reduced freedom&flexibility comes from where?

watch the 2nd video about china, they could do all sorts of things once the system is universal and the non digital ways of living are no more, they could impose dietary limits, time on the computer, what websites you visit etc..: you are giving the govt/corps a powerful tool, don't expect them not to use it in negative ways that could impact previous freedoms.

I think in sweden you have a different experience of government, you trust them more, you haven't got such a top down society, that's my impression. Things change though, decades or a hundred years time. For example once you have high unemployment and crime [and I think sweden's crime levels have risen iirc] and people want to democratically protest, it would be easier to track the dissenters and govt critics.

I mean what is the upside of a chip under the skin, you don't need to have a door key or wallet? is that it? It doesn't bother me if it's optional, that's the key, but once the majority have it the rest will gradually be forced or miss out on being able to shop and do basic things in life etc..

Im not really worried that Sweden will turn into China anytime soon.
So there was no reduced freedom or flexibility then?
Just a "if sweden turns into china there would be"?

Everything sounds scary and bad if you always expect the worst possible outcome to come true.

Ooh do we really need cellphones, why does the government want to reach me when im outside?
Ill bet they will use the gps in my phone and see where ive been and go steal my fishing spots and my best mushroom spots.

Or you can think that a gps is pretty neat when out in the woods or out on the water. :)
