Starting in October, hundreds of Americans will be getting "Dear Taxpayer" letters telling them they've been selected for a special audit by the Internal Revenue Service.

The 13,000 chosen at random this year -- and similar numbers in subsequent years -- are part of the tax agency's National Research Program, which is designed to give the IRS a better understanding of how accurately income and deductions are reported and to reduce the so-called tax gap.

Who wants to bet that the people chosen for this year's "special audits" will be about as random as a fruit machine?
 
Should taxpayers be worried?

they need to squeeze every last bit out of you to fund their "overseas initiatives". hundreds of billions per year has to come from somewhere. sorry, had to. :thumbsup:
 
Accidently ran across the following while surfing...

USA PATRIOT Act Section 314(b) permits financial institutions, upon providing notice to the United States Department of the Treasury, to share information with one another in order to identify and report to the federal government activities that may involve money laundering or terrorist activity. Financial institutions wanting to do so may notify the Treasury Department by clicking on the Section 314(b) Certification link above and supplying the required information
 
Do you ever think rich people get audited? Hell no....

My ex-wife and I were the subject of an IRS audit about 14 years ago. Our GROSS income? < $15,000. Back taxes they say we owed? $1500

Why? I forgot to include a W2 in our return (Wasn't that much) a few years back.

Go figure :rolleyes:
im self employed and im not rich!! ive always paid in anywhere from 12k down to 2578.00 and thats last years return.have only been audited twice in 10 years, glad i keep everything for 5 years or longer.its no fun at all, makes you feel like youve committed a crime:mad:
