So being in Australia our provider selection is very limited but I've noticed all the new slots have bonus buys.

My budget is reasonably small so I cant afford to do lots of bonus buys like all the streamers but I thought I'd give it a go on $0.25 stakes and buy 20 bonuses.

Every single bonus lost money, the best result was 95% of the bonus buy cost. The worst was $0.

Bonus buys are good for streamers as they can create content quickly, but unless you have big wallets for everyone else they are basically too expensive.

I'm curious though, do any of you guys buy bonus buys or just roll bonuses in naturally?

Personally I think bonus buys have ruined slots. They take the excitement out of rolling in a bonus.

Agree 100% that

I too am a low stakes player that rarely buys a bonus. I had an atrocious session a couple of weeks ago where I lost most of my balance very quickly on $0.20 stakes. I needed to wind things up late in the arvo and had $24 left in my account so decided to uncharacteristically buy a bonus on one of the new Prags. It paid $1.31 which fittingly put a dog turd on the end of my session.

The only other time I’ll entertain buying a bonus is during a Christmas session with the missus. We put $120 aside last Christmas to purchase six bonuses. We didn’t quite win our money back but were close which gave us a decent spinning session afterwards. We’re planning the same thing this Christmas but I always consider it $120 spaffed away until the results come in…

I'm ashamed to admit that my biggest ever win on slots was a 15,000x max win on a gates of olympus 1000.

I never really do bonus buys as I usually play with a deposit bonus but occasionally it has been the optimal way to play the bonus (low RTP, no max bet, win limit for example), like in the case of my max win.

I don't mind the idea of ante bets or small bonus buys in principle - the problem is that the monopoly money crowd have completely ruined the concept.

We now have a whole generation of slots where the base game is essentially a glorified pre-gamble, there's little to no RTP in it, and they're basically selling you the solution (a bonus buy) to the problem they invented (a dull base game)... not too dissimilar to tactics from predatory microtransactions in video games.

Since they're banned in the UK regulated market, we only have the choice of the dull base game, so people need to vote with their wallet and play better slots rather than spend an hour chasing a bonus that could still pay 10x or less despite being valued considerably higher than more traditional bonuses.
