The boss of Bet365 Denise Coates has paid herself £469million - the biggest salary in UK history.

The gambling tycoon, 53, increased her salary by 45 per cent, taking her total earnings since 2016 to £1.3 billion.

The payday means that, between April 2019 and March 2020, she earnt the equivalent of £1.3 million per day, or £54,000 per hour, and took home 2,360 times more than the Prime Minister.

She took a punt, she invested in her business, grew it and now shes reaping the rewards. And more importantly she's not hiding the profits or her pay offshore and is very prepared to pay tax on it.

1. Although the "fair enough, good on her" sentiment is understandable the sheer scale of her self assigned wage exceeds any reasonable rationality- I think what ticks most people off is the idea that setting up a bookmaker is worth 5000x what someone doing actual labour is.
But if what others say about her being altruistic is correct then there's really not much she can do about it aside from perhaps address the sicknesses her industry creates.

1 million pound giveaways could literally change the life of some of her customers, for example. That would be giving something back and is what I would do in her position. It would be coming out of personal wealth rather than impacting on the business.

The thing is Collin I can certainly empathise. Getting rich to that extent is as much about luck and a certain set of circumstances occurring as it is hard graft. There is always an element of lottery involved. People go to work, graft hard for 40-50 hours a week and earn a fraction of that.

Add on to that the fact that it’s an absolutely obscene amount of money (that just simply cannot be spent) and you can see why people would feel the money could be used to make other people’s lives better too.

Look at people like George Michael. Earned nowhere near that much per year but it came out after he died he gave millions away to charities and also complete randomers. Gave money to a lady who was on Deal or No Deal for IVF, gave money to a waitress at a restaurant he was eating at so she could pay her education etc etc. Genuinely altruistic people like that get my respect more than anyone else.

Of course it’s her money to as she pleases with, she earned it fair and square...but I just can’t help but think, how much is enough??

She is rich because Bet365 online was self-financed, not beholden to banks or other shareholders. It's a private company, owned mostly by her so theoretically she can have all the profits as a salary.

She is actually being very good by paying herself such a huge salary, as 45% of it will go to the treasury in tax. She could legally avoid over half of that if she was so minded to.

As said, she donates tens of millions to good causes. She also avoids the temptation of spunking it all into the bottomless pit of her crap Football Club Stoke City, sponsoring rather than owning it.

Or she could do what Saint Rashford and other footballers and 'celebrities' do - create a company separately to encompass say image rights or marketing and divert some income in to that. Then they can 'lend' themselves that money so the company's profits aren't taxable but go down as a loan liability. Last year, Rashford for example trousered at least 270k extra by using this loophole, 'lending' himself 900k. He of food bank fame. Not blaming him, he would never have thought of it himself, it would have been his agent and/or accountant's doing.

So we have a woman, very successful who was paid more than all the bosses of the FTSE 100 companies combined.

Good on her. The huge majority of the profits come from overseas, so it's an invisible export for the UK balance of payments.

I would like to see her become the first boss to ever be paid in excess of £1bn a year.

She should be admired, not ostracised.

P.S. I find it sad that a single woman can pay more tax to the UK Exchequer than Google and Amazon combined. That's where the real issue lies.
