The banks have a huge role to play in the question of problem gamblers. Is anyone there who has either made multiple deposits say 42 in 48 hours or other similar types. Who have taken out loans and the bank has been aware that they are gambling or has gambled away obviously their property. If you fit into one of these brackets would you be willing to band together and take or help me organise a class action against the banks

That's a slippery slope.

When you have a deposit at a bank, the bank owes you money. Your are the creditor of the bank. Not the other way around.

Bank should not be in a position to dictate how and where you use your funds. That's not what they are for.

There has to be a limit for problem gamblers where the responsibilities of an individual can't be transferred or blame assigned to other parties.

I think with the nature of the slot not other gambling it's different. I think the banks do have a duty too to protect vunerable people and if they see stupid amounts being given to casinos they should block the card at least for 48 hours. There are so many online casinos and so many different jurestrictions that it is impossible to police properly. I am asking if anyone has a gripe with their bank do you want to join me in taking them on?

Why people feel there intitled all the time when something goes sour in there life of there own doing. When will people start taking responsibility for there own actions. I understand there are problem gamblers etc but seems in today's world we take things for granted and when we get in a mess we look to blame something/someone for it. If I felt I couldnt control my deposits and how many I would put a limit and use responsible tools on the casino that are available. To sue everytime will in long run will ruin it for everyone, it's time we take some responsibility and use the tools that are available to us.

In the UK, Barclays, Lloyds, Santander and RBS allow customers to block gambling transactions. But I think as easy is to block it the same easy is unblock it.

Yes indeed.

Years back when I was occasionally naive to where I made my deposits, they auto blocked a transaction I made and a simple phone call saying "yes its me and I want it to go ahead" is all it took to allow the transaction.

This is so stupid man. I have my business for 10 years and i use a credit card for several services online. Wether thats a subscription on service Y or a gamble on site X. It's not up to the bank to decide what i should do with my money in the first place. They should be happy for me being a customer there and having so much (incoming) transactions. Because banks hold incoming money, even if it's for a half day, and make a profit on that.

I've bin there, having a blocked card because some AI figured out a transaction online in a US webstore was 'fraud'. I called them up and i got told to wait for a week (6 working days) to get a new card. I got furious. Since then i can do whatever i want without a issue or so.

As for a problem gamber: really, him, her, should fucking start talking to people, and explain the situation, and get a sollution for that. Why do people like me or any other should having their cards blocked for 48 hours or so just because someone out of control blows it for the rest?

What they could do: is add another form of authentication which ensures that the card holder agrees to making such a transaction. Then in the eyes of an adult, he is simply responsible for his / her account. Dont you think?

I don't bank with any of these banks but I know that they offer a function to block future transactions to casino site you have made a deposit before.

For example, if you have made a deposit of £100 to Casumo then you would have an option to block future transactions to it.

I use Nationwide and the things that you say happen with me quite often. Sometimes, if I lose I start chasing loses depositing here and there and then I get blocked by VISA (not Nationwide). But one phone call sorts everything out and in 5 min time, I can carry on doing with my money anything I want. :)

I have to agree with whats already been said, its not down to the banks to block possible problem gamblers transactions.

People have to take responsibility for their own actions which would mean they should be self excluding if they can't control the spending.

Very often I have a budget of 200 or more but rather than deposit it in one lump I only put on 20 at a time to try and get lucky so that would be 10 transactions in possibly a few hours so it would be stupid to block them based on the amount of transactions in the same way having a bank limit would be too as if i have a big win or do some recycling of funds it would trigger that as well.

Any limits should be set casino end, nothing to do with my bank.

Adults neees to take responsibility.
Where would this concept stop?
The alcoholic claiming that the bank should have noticed the bargain booze and local pub transactions?
The obese person with food addictions that the bank should have stopped from spending at McDonald’s, KFC, Greggs and subway?

The banks simply mind your money for you. What did you expect them to do? Call your parents or partner to tell over you?

My bank frequently issue me with a new cash card. Even tho I never requested one. I think my gambling transactions must trigger some sort of ‘fraud protection’ system.

From the original post It simply sounds like someone is in denial and trying to claw back a lot of lost money (which will more than likely end up back in the casinos anyhow).

I have to respectfully disagree with the OP. The money in the bank is mine. I don’t ever want anyone deciding what is “best” for me and my finances. There are already too many laws, regulations, and binding court decisions telling us how to live our lives.

We already live in a nanny state, let’s not make it worse

So let me get this straight, the OP wants to sue the banks for allowing them to gamble with their own money?

I guess people who are alcoholics, or obese, or take drugs can also do the exact same thing right?

"Hey, does anyone want to join me in a class action suit against the banks. Every time I get money out to buy cocaine, the banks just let me."...

Hmmm

Have to be one more person to join opinion that banks really can't be suggested to watch and block legal transactions people are making. When getting to that point that gambling problem is so severe, very efficient way in it is cut source to money, someone else can assist and hold access to persons account and only certain very limited amount of money would be available there for spending (where ever want it to be, for pints with friends, small shopping, eating out or even gambling) and all the other money for rent, bills and other important mandatory stuff would be behind of someone else.

Like suggested here earlier, it can be possible to block certain gambling transactions but that's probably not very bullet proof as person still have access to money and buy paysafe or other pre-paid cards or find way to circumvent these blocks quite easily. Like spoken in Gamstop and other self-exclusion topics, when person get in so big troubles with gambling (or some other addiction which is too strong to control by person him/herself) that these blocks just don't help anymore as there is always way for you to gamble if you have money. You can even find people who create account and deposit for you when you give cash etc... Way to do that can be found if will is strong enough.

For these very serious addictions blocking something or blaming that somebody should have stopped person from doing something, like depositing and gambling, which is not very strange thing to do which should flag everywhere high risk behavior and should be stopped. Like pointed out, these kind of actions would make majority of people who haven't got addicted for gambling to get very inconvenient situations when their money transfers would be blocked and returned after many business days, all the banks and payment providers wouldn't be able to serve people how they should when people want to use own money.

These addicted people should be helped and look for support which i hope is available. It's long and very hard to comply with such severe addiction but due that it also needs very stong approach and start from point where there is no access to money, strong support and safe net built from everywhere it's possible and try to get on with that. It's big change to life to get out from addiction and many need really strong support like this, but when you are in situation that it's only way, then it pretty sure is worth it.

When claiming banks, casinos, failing GS etc.... what ever is reason for failing when trying to be wihout gambling, it's still pretty much denial of addition to be that stron what it really is and trying to take easy way out by extending responsibilities to others but unfortunately it's not working like that for longer period, if person can't control habbits which cause so big damage, then admitting problem and reaching much support as possible is usually pretty much only way to help. As long in denial state and claim others to fails when trying to control addiction, real work trying to control it and live with that is not really done yet, but unfortunately need to take one step deeper to be ready to fight against it with all possible ways.

Due to AML regulations, banks are gaining more and more power over our ability to use our own money however we choose. I believe UK banks can withhold cash withdrawals if they are not satisfied with the provided explanation as to its intended use (HSBC in particular, according to The Guardian).

And banks, in particular NatWest, are frequently shutting people out of their own accounts, even those that have been held for 30+ years, if they deem anything about the account is "suspicious".

So it isn't really that much of a leap for banks to start monitoring our personal spending in every arena. Lloyds often used to block my card when I was out shopping, as they were convinced my spending was outside my normal patterns. A phone call and it was sorted, but it was so effing annoying at the time. And embarrassing at times as well.

As others have said, this would be a very slippery slope indeed, and the beginning of the end for individual responsibility. In other words, the first step to an Orwellian society.

If you have a gambling problem, and wish to stop gambling totally, register with Gamstop or exclude from the casinos you play at.

If you have a gambling problem, but don't wish to stop gambling, then set deposit limits at the casinos to help you remain within your financial limits.

But no matter what, you have to take - and accept - responsibility for your actions. Expecting others to take the blame when you fail is profoundly disturbing.

A loan or overdraft is not actually your money
Banks are actively watching people take out loans and then making multiple deposits to online casinos. They know the games are hypnotic and addictive and still allow it. A senior manager addmitted it to me. The new apps are good but it does take time to admit a problem and address. Some people do not have anyone they feel they can talk to. With the time lag of admitting the problem and activating the app it maybe to late as these games can take your money very fast.
Also it is online and there is no one to see very different to land based where there is someone to kick you out. A limit of 3 deposits by the banks is a good measure. Any one making 10 o 20 has a problem whether they admit it or not. I did get myself into trouble in 2016 with a casino that the withdraw button did not work for 9 months during that time I deposited 80k and did not withdraw. I could not get hold of them when I was asking and eventually had to do it through private messaging here. I then went on to give them the rest. Eventually they did activate it. That should never have happened.. They now have destroyed my data! I no longer gamble.
