Ok, there are all sorts of things rolling around in my head about a new release from Play'n Go called Hugo. The marketing email was sent through the other day, an extract is below:

This sunny season is a time to be nostalgic about our youth and remember all the summer vacation fun of yore. You may recall the video game hero Hugo, a friendly, animated troll created by ITE in Denmark. Hugo first premiered in an interactive TV game show for children in 1990, and he is now famous in video games throughout the world. We are happy to announce that he’s back in Hugo, a new slot game adventure from Play’n GO!

There have been plenty of cartoon/comic inspired slots before, ie Pink Panther, Marvel series, DC comics, South Park, Family Guy the list goes on. However few of these titles are directly aimed at children. Hugo on the other hand was, and still is if you look in the app store.

As a parent and an advocate of keeping minors well away from gambling, I take issue with this particular slot. I am wondering what other members of the forum feel about it. I understand that this Hugo character is no longer on the TV, but neither is Mickey Mouse and we don't see him on the reels of a slot game.

Play'n Go as well. I would have had these near the bottom of a list of developers that might venture down this route. But they must not see this the same way as I do? :eek2:

I see what you mean, but i think we would have seen Mickey moue as a slot a long time ago, if Disney would let that slide..of course they won't, or at least iu can't imagine them doing so..

But as far as i know the Gambling community in Scandinavia is huge, and i guess most of the 'first generation' gamblers from there, as well as the people from the same age group in other countries where Hugo aired, may like the idea of having an icon from their childhood interpreted as slot.. i think it's harmless, because:

A: even if intended for children, they sure as hell won't be playing them, in fact, if you want to avoid children getting into contact with gambling, then remove all gambling adds and BS free slots from Facebook! Lol, mini rant.. but you know what i mean.

B: there's plenty more gambling content that has a high degree of 'childish' flair, so to speak, the only difference is that this slot uses an icon.

That said, i can't really see the charm of it myself, and from what i've seen they could've done something better with this...

Cannot argue with this. My facebook account is absolutely jammed full of these. Although this is largely due to my searching patterns.

Since the relaxation of rules on gambling advertising in the UK, especially around big sporting events, children are very familiar with Ray Winston and his opinions on in-play betting and Chris Camara's enthusiasm for Ladbrokes.

I have heard my nephew singing the tune of bingo site Gala and their catchy advert:

So, is it just the norm now that minors are fully immersed in gambling from an early age and there is little anyone can do about it? Maybe understanding what it is earlier on in life may make you less inclined to have a problem with it later?? - who knows. The same argument could be made for sex education for all children in schools, aimed at helping reduce the amount of underage pregnancies.

It's a good question, and hard to answer, i guess most of it comes down to the parents and schools.. maybe it's time that some special education should also be reserved for the Gambling topic...just like the 'special education' that is now normal for topics such as sex and drugs.

Anyway, wanted to thank your post, but have no clue how :)

I think this sums it up pretty much in a nutshell.
There are many slots out there with a cartoonish and/or childish theme.
One that springs in mind right away is Sugar Trail from Quickspin or even slots like JATB from Netent are derived from a kids storybook.

I see it just as with smoking or drinking alcohol.
These are prohibited for children but nevertheless they can freely see those products on sale in the shops.
They can see them but not buy or consume them.

I suppose it is the same for gambling..A strictly adult hobby. :):)

It is like with everything nowadays, e.g. McDonalds. Coca-Cola etc. Why should an industry which is based on pure greed go other ways?

You breed today your paying customers of tomorrow.

FYI, i do not agree with these tactics but that's how it is. Media has become the biggest influence on the children while growing up, parents play mostly second fiddle today.

Apparently if you've never smoked by the age of 18 you're very unlikely to become a smoker.

Therefore, if you are a tobacco company and want new customers, where do you search?

Perhaps this is what Hugo is all about
...tapping up your next generation of customers. Or maybe they are trying to tap into some nostalgia thing. Or maybe....Hugo is just some super badass cartoon character who secretly had a massive gambling problem that he's kept under wraps until now and now just wants us to share a spin or two with us all.

Definitely the latter for me. Sure I've seen him in Ladbrokes playing 'big cheese' on big bet.

Gnatent and latterly PNG are producing a lot of what I term 'Early Learning Centre slots' with juvenile themes. Most disturbing was Gnatent's Koi Princess seemingly based on Jap hentai porn. Over the years I have added over 2,000 slots to Slotscomparer and have seen countless others, sweet themed, cartoon puppies/cats etc. which makes me wonder. Odobo games which you can find at many Bingo sites are as bad too.

Some providers like RTG and Nextgen tend to avoid childish themes, as do Novomatic and IGT. I wouldn't count Marvel slots say as childish in the same manner. It definitely seems to be a European thing.

One could suspect that kids watching parents play could be attracted to them too.

It's almost like marketing an alcopop product with Noddy And Big Ears on the label -it would never be allowed.

In addition to the above, the childish themes put me off anyway and I wouldn't play them.

It really needs to be looked at with a discerning eye before these games ever get released.

Right time to take action then. All major providers have been emailed with drafts and detailed breakdowns of suggested new games.

These will be taken to the opposite end of the scale

No Spoilers but here are a few I suggested

Post Office Cue Romance

Care Home Struck and Care Home Struck II

Geriactricgoonz

Starworst (for wear)

Game of Wreaths

Dementia or Alive

Yup I bored and no offence was intended in the making of these weak ass jokes!

Blasphemy! :D

Seriously though, i wondered there if you were joking or if you are actually only aware of the 'dirty' side of the Japanese Cartoon culture, better known as 'Anime'? :) If it's a joke then please disregard, if not, then you should check it out on wiki, after which you should realize that a lot of the theme's are similar to what we get dished on the telly 'here', apart from all the reality crap: love, friendship, good and bad, internal struggle, self awareness, social etiquette and whatnot..

Of course all those things have nothing to do with the slot, but neither does hentai porn...
It's pretty innocent i.m.o. just a slot with a well known Anime theme, so you shouldn't think much of it.

NextGen has various 'childish' slots btw. and most of the bigger providers do. Childish is of course a term that is very open to interpretation, but let's say cartoony and funny stuff, bright, glittery and shiny symbols count too?! Then they all have 'em.
There 's obviously a market for it, and i must admit that my inner child is also quite active at times, so i am prone to like 'funny cartoony' stuff.

I saw your vid about 'Hugo' btw, and had to agree in this case it was more annoying then funny ^.^

Anyway, this part is not towards you but in general: it dates as far back as the first land-based machines back in the day: those flashing magical boxes were openly visible to kids, because they could be found in all kinds of establishments. It was then, when people should have started asking these kind's of questions..Don't you think the grannies and grampies that you see now, filling the land-based Casino's rows of oldtimer slots and penny machines, are those kids from back then? I do! So there's a thing that really hasn't changed, save for the graphics and advanced technology.

By letting children play with videoconsoles and handhelds from an early age on, like we do this day and age, when they pretty much can get internet anywhere, for free, and are even better/smarter in using them then the adults that bought them for 'em, and of course less responsible and world wise, we are making it near impossible to protect these kids from 'evil' content such as discussed.

They will see things many of us haven't even seen yet..:eek2:

What i guess i am trying to say is, that we shouldn't really be asking these questions about what the slots providers intent is, but rather what the hell is going on with, or become of our next generation. To be blunt: If we seemingly allow crap in our lives left and right, how can we really expect our kids to avoid it? They see dads, mums and sisters and friends gambling their last pennies away, abuse people physically and mentally about race, sexuality, accidental scenarios, or just for the fuck of it, smoke, drink and drug their way into the abyss, blaspheme, pray to unseen entities, and the list goes on..

If you don't have any of the above in your daily life or surroundings, chances are you will be sitting on the couch watching it, in the form of reality tv.

Kids will have to filter all that shit that they see and live through daily, for years, and manage to build a stable character with a good sense of right and wrong despite it, to be prepared to see some more of it, for the next 60 to 100 years to come..

It sounds depressing if you put it like that, but on the whole, it's actually pretty much just like it has always been before.
Oh, and that's definitely not just a European thing.

/mini turned into maxi after all, but hey...
It's just sensitive stuff.

I left my 7 year old nephew in charge of some starburst free spins while I stuck the kettle on and he shouted out to me "What is this shit your playing? "
