I know this is a gambling forum but I need help & I guess computer whizz's gamble as well :D

My computer is nearly 4 years old & I don't really know much about them but the essentials. Anyway I got the service pack 3 installment in my updates & when I went to install it it asked me to insert the microsoft word 2000 disc - I didn't get this disc with my computer (comp was purchased brand new). As I didn't have the disc I couldn't go any further with the installment so I clicked cancel. Every time I got updates this would be 1 of them so in the end I ticked the box not to be reminded anymore.
I regulary free up disc space on the harddrive, do a disc defrag & I have a microsoft approved registry booster + all the antivirus stuff. Lately my comp has been freezing & when you click off pages they don't go - I send through an error report & it directs me to the microsoft page to check comp updates. It tells me it is doing it because I have blocked service pack 3 from downloading, so I unblock it & download goes fine - then I have to restart computer. After restart my comp will not start it takes me to a page where I have to go into safe mode & go to system restore & go back before the download. The same goes for the new Internet explorer update. So, the question is what do I do to fix this problem cos at the moment it is driving me nuts.
Sorry if I am hard to understand, I have problems explaining things, lol :D

Basically I don't know.:eek2:
Really this sort of problems needs to be fixed hands on.

You could try turning off update then restoring your computer to the time before you initially tried to install SP3. I assume all was fine before this.
Then you could try updating office 2000 directly from here.

reboot and turn autoupdate back on.
install any updates.

If you are desperate PM me and we can arrange to chat on msn or something in real time and I will try to help you from there.

You can also try going to Add/remove programs to see if it is in the list. You can remove the update there. It may have downloaded some components and since it didn't finish may be interferring with other programs. Good luck!

i dont know if im on the right track but sometimes the problems arise from installing the service packs in the first place, try googling "problems with service pack 3or2" you may get some answers, i know when some service packs came out there were alot of people getting problems,

i just googled "

The problem is with Word 2000 and the Windows installer. When updating, it cannot find the ????.msi file relating to the installation of Office 2000 (which includes Word 2000), so prompts you to install the original disk.

I had the same problem with an even older PC, Windows 98 and preloaded with Word 2000 (no disk). When Microsoft migrated to a new version of their Windows installer, which does things differently, and requires access to this ???.msi file, one for each Microsoft product installed, this problem began.

Microsoft failed to think of the bespoke OEM versions of Word 2000 or Office 2000 that came preloaded on PC's, with the purchaser not being supplied with an installation disk.

The solution I found for mine was to remove Word 2000, update the PC, and then reinstall Word 2000 using a "Master Restore" disk that came with the PC that also had options to selectively remove and reinstall bundled components.

If you do not have such a disk, it is likely that your "installation disk" is actually located in a special partition on your hard drive, one which is used normally to "restore factory defaults" when your OS gets really screwed up. Microsoft have failed to cater for this configuration when designing the updates, they assume EVERYONE has been issued with original Microsoft approved installation disks by the vendor of their PC.

Some PC's that use this system of a hard drive partition have an option that allows the user to burn a physical installation disk, which you WOULD need were you to change your hard drive for any reason. The procedure for doing this differs from PC to PC, and may not even be possible.

Something else to try would be to look for a folder called CAB or CABS, probably located in one of the system folders, such as Windows. This folder holds a set of system recovery files, not necessarily everything, but in compressed format. If you locate this folder, when you get the message to insert the disk, check "go to folder" or something similar, and point it to this CAB or CABS folder instead. If your Word 2000 has a recovery set of files there, the updater will be able to locate the ???.msi file it needs to complete, and it should proceed to completion.

Service pack 3 is a pretty big update, and there were MANY problems when it was first released.

I have NOT yet even put it on this PC, even though the problems have mostly been solved. This is because it warns that you MAY lose your data if things go wrong, and you CANNOT reverse right back to where you were before and get your data back again.

I DID install this pack on another PC, and everything was fine, casinos still worked, and I saw no signs of data loss, however, I am not prepared to risk some of the data on THIS machine, such as photos, so will do this update when I have done backups, and have plenty of time to fix things if it goes pear shaped.

Thank guys for your help & replies :D

Well first off, suggestafix didn't tell me anything I didn't know but I did find some other interesting stuff :) Rusty suggestion was good but it kept telling me I need to insert a disc. As they said on suggestafix I don't really need it anyway, so I thought bugger it I won't bother but that didn't solve the freezing issue so I went to ebay & purchased a Norton 2009 internet security as I have been using AGV & needed to update anyway. I installed it 2 days ago & haven't had a problem since :) finger's crossed, lol. Then I thought I would really like to have my microsoft word working cos when I was playing the sheep game Rusty would put a link & microsoft word would not work so I had no idea what I missed out on :D I went to add & remove programs & clicked change on it & it came up with a few options & one was repair so I did that, now the file is 4,095MB & it still tells me to insert CD so now I am downloading the new Microsoft word from Minninova & I'm hoping soon I will be set :D

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH

VWM, have you been trippin' on shrooms again? :p Please go back and refresh your vast knowledge of all things computer (eg. the purpose of CAB files and the relevance of OEM versions of Win2000).

@Cassa, I am happy to send you the full version of Win2000 and Office2000 on disk (with keys). Just PM a mailing address.

@Bill Gates, Yes I realize this bothers you a little. Bite Me.:D
