The Free Games on Lightning Link products (and similar) never pay well. Or very rarely. They are just a different means to get to the coin feature - which is the one you want.
To answer you questions...
1. They are all random... it makes no difference how much money it has taken before you, the chance of every win is the same on every credit.
2. On games with progressives you are more likely to win the higher value ones the higher you bet, but even so, you should avoid chasing jackpots. Play at a bet level that is comfortable for you and stick to it... don't chase.
3. Machines dont go tight or loose... they are random. They can FEEL tight or loose, but they are not doing it on purpose... that's just statistics for you. That said, if you are having a dead spell, just move on. And of course the opposite is true!
4. The only way to go home with some money is to not gamble it all away
I personally set my stake to 1/100 of my bankroll and see what happens.
