$150K wardrobe for Palin?

This is what (Republican) campaign contributions are helping to pay for....

Anyone have some figures for Obama & Biden? I bet they're up there as well..

This is/was our money here that bought this, our tax dollars, since McCain chose to only accept campaign funding from the public financing system, whereas Obama had chose to go the private route for campaign funding thru private donations !!

Palin Clothes Spending Has Dems Salivating, Republicans Disgusted

October 22, 2008 01:30 AM

Since her selection as John McCain's running mate, the Republican National Committee spent more than $150,000 on clothing and make-up for Gov. Sarah Palin, her husband, and even her infant son, it was reported on Tuesday evening.

That entertaining scoop -- which came by way of Politico -- sent almost immediate reverberations through the presidential race. A statement from McCain headquarters released hours after the article bemoaned the triviality of the whole affair.

"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it's remarkable that we're spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses," said spokesperson Tracey Schmitt. "It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."

But even the most timid of Democrats are unlikely to heed this call for civility. For starters, the story has the potential to dampen enthusiasm among GOP activists and donors at a critical point in the presidential race. It also creates a huge PR headache for the McCain ticket as it seeks to make inroads among voters worried about the current economic crisis.

Mainly, however, Democrats (in this scenario) are not prone to forgiveness. After all, it was during this same campaign cycle that Republicans belittled the $400 haircut that former Sen. John Edwards had paid for with his own campaign money (the funds were later reimbursed). And yet, the comparison to that once-dominant news story is hardly close: if Edwards had gotten one of his legendary haircuts every singe week, it would still take him 7.2 years to spend what Palin has spent. Palin has received the equivalent of $2,500 in clothes per day from places such as Saks Fifth Avenue (where RNC expenditures totaled nearly $50,000) and Neiman Marcus (where the governor had a $75,000 spree).

Yea, just what someone without enough food to feed their children needs....$1000+ outfits.

I wonder how long it took for them to come up with that statement after this story broke....

Exactly...I am sure she and everyone that bought the clothes on that budget...our tax dollars...will be giving them away to some charity !!

Cult of the superficial at work again - $400 haircuts and ridiculously expensive wardrobes and makeovers...great examples of the inappropriate excesses taking place in the world of politics that need to be curbed, with those concerned brought back to reality and the real issues.

This story does not resonate well with the Palin image of "homeyness" I have to say.

But in the interests of balance, how much digging has the media devoted to the other candidates....or is it just the Republicans who go in for this sort of unseemly extravagance???

I think that you have both sides upset at this because for one, WE ARE BROKE and McPalin is running on a campaign of REFORM and whatever else is popular that week.

It does not show very good judgement or thought! The fact that they stole Obama's CHANGE slogan you would think they would try to appear to not be the same old crap we have now.

I actually feel sorry for McCain because IMO he deserved better than this. I saw McPalin in a new intervew and the two of them did not gel like they did when he introduced her and was staring at her butt the entire time she was talkin.

Cambpell Brown from CNN usually openly campaigns for Obama but has even been put off by this uproar . She makes a valid point .

To even things out:

Compare that with the attention given to Sen. Barack Obama's $1,500 suits or Sen. John McCain's $520 Ferragamo shoes. There is no comparison.

LOL "The fact that they stole Obamas CHANGE slogan you would think they would try to appear to not be the same old crap we have now"

This is the main problem. Both Obame and McCain are the same old crap as we have now. None of them brings anything new, but all of their lies about change confuse people and get their votes.

They both support overspending, they both support the war, they both support the federal reserve system, they both supported the bailout.

What we need it true change. End the wars and end the Federal Reserve system. But trust me this is not the change theese barstards are talking about.

So please consider another candidate that actually will bring change Baldwin/Castle 2008

The wardrobe issue was on the today show. Most people who made comments were upset about the amount of money spent. Noone said she had to shop at Walmart but she didnt have to go Neiman Marcus either. She could of done Macy's or J Crew and still look good. McCain also had $500 imported leather shoes on recently. But then on the other hand when a politician doesnt dress flashy (ie obama wearing a polo shirt with no tie)then all of a sudden hes disrespectful. I just feel that people love to bitch and find reasons not to like someone if they try hard enough

Like I said a very long time ago in the attic......materialistic things dont make anyone more secure or better than others. Spending $5 on a cup of coffee and then bitching about the price of gas is ridiculous as well. Unfortunately we live in a "want it now get it now society" OR "over indulgence lifestyles"
What alot of people dont realize is the more money people have the less they spend, that is why they have so much money. (im talking the average person)I know so many people who walk around in expensive clothes that cannot afford it and then I see people I know who make good money that wear good clothes that dont scream "i paid too much look at me". It all started with designer jeans lol. Im serioius...One day everyone was wearing levis and wrangler and BAM Calvin Klein came out and everything went out of control

My brother gave me a nice compliment not too long ago. I sometimes feel "not as good" when Im around him because of his achievements, Im proud of him and he has worked hard and he doesnt judge me, Its more me judging myself. Anyway, We were talking about some star writing out a million dollar check for some charity and I said something like "and here I am with my huge $2.50 a month being deducted from my account" for this same animal charity and laughed at myself. He turned and said to me "you know, I admire you more than that star because its nothing for someone who has billions to write a million dollar check" "its people like you that dont have alot that should be noted, not the people who can obviously afford it" That made me feel good. Its so true and that is why the money that these politicians spend on clothes, transportation, hotels etc...are just ridiculous. How the hell can you talk about this country being in debt and tell everyone how your going to fix it when youre walking around in a $10K outfit? I would respect a person much more if they wore what they could really afford then to pretend be someone they arent

I think most politicians spend a lot on their wardrobes. It seems to be only Sarah Palin who is under a microscope. I realize Michelle Obama mentioned an outfit she wore as being from J.Crew, but she also has worn designer outfits, like one by Isabel Toledo purchased at Ikram, which is a high-end women's fashion clothing boutique located in Chicago. I'm sure Hillary didn't wear cheap stuff either, nor do Obama's suits look like they came from JCPenney.
