Overview

Danger High Voltage is a hit song by an American rock band called Electric Six. Some may say the band is a bit of a one-hit-wonder, but it’s fair to say this hugely successful song, first released way back in 2002, has achieved phenomenal success. It’s been featured in numerous adverts and films and played in clubs and bars all over the world.

When the rock band first released the song, it’s unlikely they could ever imagine that it’d one day end up being the theme behind one of the world’s most successful online video slots — but that’s exactly what happened.

Big Time Gaming managed to secure a licensing deal to build a video slot around the theme, aptly titled Danger High Voltage.

Players love big Time Gaming’s Danger High Voltage slot. Thanks to its funky gameplay, it’s become one of the most popular Big Time Gaming slot machines ever released.

The two bonuses, the Gates of Hell free spins and the High Voltage free spins, both produce some mammoth payouts. We’ll cover both free spins round bonuses and more later on within this review.

An Electric Layout

From the moment you first load up this popular Big Time Gaming slot, you’ll notice the game’s full of flashing lights, bright lights, and, of course, a funky Danger High Voltage song.

The disco-inspired slot certainly lives up to what we’ve become used to seeing from the software provider regarding creativity and design.

Danger High Voltage also goes against what we see in many game developer slots, choosing not to use their hugely popular Megaways feature.

Instead, Danger High Voltage uses a 4,096-ways-to-win mechanic, and this 4,096-ways-to-win engine means that the slot is built around a 6-reel, 4-row format.

While playing, you’ll notice that wins form from left to right. You need to match three or more symbols (or two, if it’s the game’s highest-paying symbol) on adjacent reels from the left to form a winning combo; the positioning of the symbols is irrelevant.

Betting & Game Options

The Danger High Voltage slot offers a variety of betting options to all players, and the min bet has been designed to be really low — just $0.20 — ensuring even those on the tightest of budgets can enjoy the game’s action.

What’s more, even with the high win potential found within the Danger High Voltage slot, you’ll be able to wager as much as $40 per spin. This max bet is relatively high for a BTG slot, especially one that’s capable of producing wins upwards of 15,000X your stake!

In terms of in-game options, Danger High Voltage (like most Big Time Gaming slots) has little available to you in terms of “extras.” The main game function is simply the autoplay feature.

This allows you to set up to 100 spins to play out automatically, and you can set up these spins so that it automatically deactivates when the free spins feature is triggered or when you hit a pre-set max win or max loss.

Unfortunately, BTG doesn’t offer any quickspin function in their slots. However, thankfully, the reels in Danger High Voltage spin relatively quickly, so this shouldn’t prove a problem for the vast majority of players.

RTP and Volatility

Danger High Voltage is a high volatility slot, something we’ve come to expect from virtually all of the software provider’s games. Still, some players argue the game plays more like a volatility medium/high slot.

Most online casinos, and the software provider themselves, categorize Danger High Voltage as a high volatility slot. In part, that’s thanks to the fact that there are six reels, 4096 ways to win, and some high variance bonus features that don’t often pay much.

The game’s RTP, 95.67%, is a little lower than we’re used to seeing from Big Time Gaming, but it’s not poor overall. If we’re honest with you, it’s probably higher than many of the video slots you’ll see being pushed out at online casinos today.

What’s more, the Danger High Voltage RTP, 95.67%, doesn’t play a huge impact in the short term. So, new players or those looking just to try out the slot shouldn’t need to worry about it too much.

Symbols and Payouts

When you first play Danger High Voltage, you’ll likely (like us) find the combination of symbols pretty weird. Big Time Gaming has chosen to really get a bit quirky when it comes to developing the symbols.

The game uses playing card values for the lower-paying symbols, including 10, jack, queen, king, and ace. However, BTG has also added a nine into the mix, which, as you’d expect, is the game’s lowest payout.

When it comes to the premium symbols, this is where things get a bit strange — you’ll see Tacos, a Disco Ball and Bells present on the reels. The game’s most valuable symbol is the Purple Dia de Muertos Skull (all BTG slots tend to have a purple symbol for the highest-value icon). In Danger High Voltage, it’s worth 25X your stake if you manage to form a 6-of-a-kind combo.

There are wild fire symbols present during the base game, but we’re going to hold off talking about these for now, as they’re something we’ll cover when looking at the bonuses and features found in the Danger High Voltage slot. You’ll also see the game’s scatter symbol represented by the Hearts, with the text “JOY DESIRE” overlaid on the front.

Bonuses and Features

There are a few bonus features to be found within Danger High Voltage. One of these can be found within the base game, while the other two are delivered in the form of a free spins feature. We look at all of these features below.

Stacked Wilds

During the base game, stacked wild symbols can land anywhere on reels 2-5. It’s important to note that these are not expanding wilds — they land fully in view or don’t land at all. Now, some of these wild symbols are regular wilds; they simply make it a bit easier to form wins.

However, occasionally, in the base game, you’ll notice that the Wild Electricity wild symbols land in view. The Wild Electricity symbols have a 6X multiplier attached to them. If one of these wilds lands, and forms parts of a win, the 6X multiplier will be applied against the win.

The Electricity wild symbols also multiply against one another. So, for example, landing two 6X multiplier wild symbols will see the total win multiplied by 36X. You can land up to three of these wilds on a single spin.

Free Spins

When you play Danger High Voltage, the main thing you’ll be looking out for is the free spins feature, and this is triggered by landing three or more of the scatter symbols anywhere on the six reels, four rows. Their positioning on the reels doesn’t matter.

You will then get to choose from one of two bonus features, both of which we’ll look at below.

High Voltage Free Spins

The first option you’ll have available to you is the High Voltage free spins feature. This is the lower variance of the two bonuses, and if you choose this option, you’ll be awarded 15 free spins.

High Voltage isn’t the most popular of the free spins features on offer, but it can still pay pretty well; a special High Voltage Wild can appear on reels 2 to 5.

When this High Voltage Wild appears, a multiplier value will be applied to it — either 11X, 22X, 33X, 44X, 55X or 66X.

This multiplier applies to any win formed during the High Voltage free spins, and if the symbols line up well enough, you can hit some big wins during this free spin feature.

It’s also possible to trigger more spins during this free spins feature, which is achieved by landing another three or more of the scatter symbols anywhere in view.

There’s no limit on the number of FFS you can win during the free spins bonus round, so it can go on for quite a long time if you get lucky!

Gates of Hell Free Spins

The Gates of Hell free spins bonus is, without a doubt, the most popular of the free spins features within the Danger High Voltage slot. If you choose the Gates of Hell spins feature, you’ll be awarded just seven free spins. However, it’s possible to win up to 19 free spins in total, as you’ll soon see.

Before this feature begins, one of the game’s symbols will be chosen at random to become a sticky wild. These sticky wilds then lock in place whenever you land one instance of the symbols on reels 2-5 during the bonus, and if you manage to fill an entire reel of the sticky wilds, you’ll be awarded three additional free spins.

The Gates of Hell free spins feature is very volatile, and if you don’t get many sticky wilds, you can end up walking away with very small wins. However, it also offers the most potential of the two free spin bonus round features, which is why it’s the most popular of the two free spin features offered in the slot.

Our verdict

Big Time Gaming’s Danger High Voltage slot is a masterpiece. It’s become one of the most popular video slots ever released, which is shown both by the number of players who continue to play Danger High Voltage and the fact that so many online casinos continue to have it on their “Most Popular” page.

In fact, BTG’s Danger High Voltage slot has become so successful that they released a sequel to the original game — Lil’ Devil.

One of the things we like most about the Danger High Voltage slot is the fact that you can choose which of the free spins features you want.

We prefer the Gates of Hell free spins feature, as we feel it offers the most potential. The High Voltage Danger High Voltage bonus can also play really well, especially if you land a premium all the way across and get a good wild multiplier!

We also like the Danger High Voltage slot because it’s possible to hit big wins during the base game. This is thanks to the Wild Electricity wilds, which can land anywhere on the reels, bar on reels 1 and 6.

Danger High Voltage Review FAQs

In order to trigger the main bonus game in Danger High Voltage, you’ll need to land three or more of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. These scatters do not need to land on adjacent reels from left to right; they can land anywhere in view. You’ll then get to choose from one of the two bonus game options on offer.

BTG has stated that it’s possible to win more than 15,000X your stake while playing Danger High Voltage. However, this win potential will almost always show itself during the bonus spins feature in the game.

It’s also possible to hit some pretty big wins in the base game if the electric wilds line up with the 6X multipliers in view!

The max bet in Danger High Voltage is really decent — BTG has set it at a whopping $40! The minimum bet is also fair, and you’ll find yourself able to play the slot from as little as $0.20 per spin. So, both experienced gamblers and new customers can enjoy the slot’s action, regardless of their preferred stake size or budget!
