Not sure if everybody is up on this but I have found that flake calcium is about the best for getting rid of ice on walkway and driveways.

Being in the swimming pool business one of the things we do during the winter is deliver calcium to hotels and learning institutions around town. It is sold as basic calcium hardness in pool supply stores and it's nice because, as opposed to salt, it does not leave that white staining on carpets and floors, it's not as harsh on pets feet and I believe it's a little more environmentally friendly.

The flakes also stay put where you sprinkle it and it really does destroy the ice.

Atleast here in Norway what we call road-salt, is indeed Calcium Chloride, which seems to be the same thing that calcium hardner contains. What might do a slight difference might that the roadsalt is hydrated, while the pool hardener is not or so.
