PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A U.S. appeals court upheld an Internet gambling ban Tuesday, rejecting a challenge from an association of off-shore bookies that the federal prohibition was too vague and violated privacy rights.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia rejected arguments from Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association in New Jersey, which had filed the lawsuit hoping to legalize online betting in that state.

Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006 to ban online gambling that would be illegal in the state where the individual or gambling business conducts the transaction. The law does not target the bet itself but criminalizes bank or credit card transactions linked to the bet.

The group, comprised of mostly offshore betting operators, had attacked the law as unconstitutionally vague. Their lawyers questioned how the location of an online bet would be determined if the gambler is in Delaware, for instance, and the operation is in Costa Rica.

At least one of the three judges who heard arguments last month seemed to question that logic

What this all boils down to is a few people (less than 2% of the population) had a problem handling there finances and gambled away there assets and every bit of cash. Alright so we get that, but to those of us who actually use money we planned for using for entertainment were now getting screwed because if we don't want to travel 3 hours to play and decide to play online instead. Were being told essentially no can do man. Personally I'm not a fan of them telling us what we can and cannot do online. I think what we do online is our own business unless if it's truly illegal (such as hacking, posting nude photos of kids, etc, etc). To me if I want to pull out my debit card and use it for a purchase of $50 worth of entertainment then I should be able to. This might not be the totally right place to rant about this, but I had to say my two cents on the subject.

The whole legislative piece of crap was hypocritical from jump. U.S. land-based casinos (otherwise known as the Las Vegas Lobby) saw perhaps for the first time, some serious competition.

U.S. gambling interests are exceptionally well represented in Congress; and if anyone doubts how much power this consortium has, remember the Susan B Anthony one dollar coin.

The coin was so close to the size of a quarter, it would not "trigger" the standard slot machines of the day. This had a huge economic impact on the casinos, so they lobbied to have legislation passed which resulted in production for a few years, of the full size Eisenhower one dollar coin, to "commemorate the moon landing". This was the last full size US coin minted, and when paper money "scanners" (which would read the lines in George Washington's face) eliminated the need for an actual coin to trip a spring loaded mechanism, they stopped producing them.

Ain't ever going to be legal in New Jersey to gamble online unless you do it from the lobby in Atlantic city and they get a cut.

Where do you get this from? Eisenhower dollars were minted from 1971-78, Susan B Anthony dollars were introduced in 1979.

Of course this is about protectionism of land based gambling and little to do with protecting people who are bent on self destruction by any means and they don't mind using the blunt instrument of legislation to club the voice of reason into submission.
What a bunch of hypocritical lilly livered scum bags.
Screw your Human rights and we will use the law to help with the screwing.

How the hell can anyone call America the land of free any more, it is the land of the enslaved and the indignantly pacified, the enlightened minority and the flag waving spoon fed majority.
I am not saying Europe or anywhere else is a better place but America used to be the place everyone looked toward as the torch bearer of freedom and enterprise but now it is seen as the stamping ground for a new breed of fascism.
How did that happen?
The dynasty of the Clinton's or the Bush's or has America had the same policy since the assassination of Kennedy?

Apologies to all my American friends, rant over.

Awesome post Rusty, I couldn't have said it better myself my friend..

We will always have those here that continue to believe the mass media lies that they are spoon fed on a daily basis from such media outlets as Fox News and the like. You could try to educate these folks all day long on the truth and what is really going on in the world regarding the Economy and the collapse to come, the 911 truth...etc. etc. etc. but they will continue to wear their blinders because they don't won't to know the truth.

It's like Jack Nicholson said in the movie "A Few Good Men"..."you can't handle the truth!" They will continue to be the mass majority of "Flag Waving Patriots" until something dire enough in effect, affects them personally or the UFO's actually land on the White House Lawn before they actually believe they have had the wool pulled over them...lol

Hell, these same sheeple still believe that we are looking for Osama Bin Laden..

It's like you say in your sig Rusty, "It is easier to accept a believable lie before an unbelievable truth Open your mind" !!!

With news that police will be used to enforce mandatory swine flu vaccinations, I've thought about moving overseas. This past Saturday, my post office set up a table to handle passport applications as the office is getting crowded with people getting passports. I've never seen them this busy in nearly twenty years I've been getting my mail at the post office box there.

And what of the unbelievable debt that the US government has gotten themselves into? Just how is that going to get repaid? It is mostly foreign countries that hold that debt and they still keep buying it! So, just what are our government officials telling them in top-most secret?? I think that they are assuring these countries that the collateral is going to be US land!! Just take it away from the citizens and give it to the debt holder (other countries, like China and Brazil) since we do not have the gold anymore to back up the debt. Maybe these 'detention camps' that conspiracy theorists claimed since the 1990s might be true after all? Just where are Americans going to go if their property is taken from them to pay the debt? Of course, I guess it will be 'your patriotic duty' to give up your land if you don't want to be staring down the barrel of a gun or have your brain nearly blown by hyper-sonic blasters.

Response to Grand Master

Fair question. Below is an excerpt from one of the leading coin grading services in the world. However, I assure you this is not the only source of this information.

I do note I had my sequence backward, but the gist of what was contained in my post about how much influence Las Vegas has is accurate.

The dollar denomination was produced for circulation again in 1971, following a lapse since 1935. The new Eisenhower dollar was made of clad metal, although some special silver-content versions were struck for collectors. The Eisenhower dollar, minted in various forms from 1971 through 1978, was created primarily in response to gambling casinos in Las Vegas which desired dollar-size coins for the gaming tables. Except for this use, Eisenhower dollars never circulated widely.

In 1979 a new idea reared its head. A study showed that a paper dollar had a useful life of about 18 months in circulation, whereas a coin might be useful for 16 years or more. The Treasury Department noted that in France and England, for example, paper currency of smaller denominations was successfully supplanted by coins. It was felt that a dollar-size coin would be economical and would save the printing of countless millions of dollar bills.

At the same time it was realized that the large diameter of the Eisenhower dollar was cumbersome. Accordingly, a new size was decided upon, a size between the familiar quarter and half dollar. Designs were prepared at the Mint, and Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro created a Liberty Head design somewhat similar to that used on the cent and half cent of 1793. This motif caused wide admiration among collectors. However, Congress was persuaded to honor Susan B. Anthony, a champion of women's rights, and Gasparro was directed to produce an Anthony design. Susan Anthony dollars were struck by the hundreds of millions and placed in circulation in 1979.

From the outset, there was a hue and cry against them. Many confused them with the quarter dollar, and numerous tales were told of Anthony dollars being thrown into turnpike toll machines or given in change as quarter dollars. Launched during the wildly inflationary presidency of Jimmy Carter, the Anthony dollar took the brunt of much public criticism against inflation itself. Although additional Susan Anthony dollars were minted in 1980 and 1981, from an early time the coin was recognized as a failure, a numismatic dodo somewhat similar to the 20-cent piece of a century earlier. Still, the pieces were and are popular with collectors, representing as they do a coin from our own time with an interesting story to tell.

*Note* This excerpt does not contain the information about not being able to "trip" the slot machines with a Susan B., but in essence it does allude to the impracticality of it. Basically, slots at that time were configured on the Eisenhower which weighed about 5 times that of the Susan B. In other words, the machine "read" the coin as a twenty five cent piece when inserted into the one dollar opening, and kicked it out.

You claimed that the casinos got the US government to mint Eisenhower dollars again after the Susan B. Anthony dollar coins were introduced. Can you provide any evidence for this?
