Bacta, the trade body for arcades (Adult Gaming Centres) have just released a statement informing that the UK government have back-tracked in allowing UK gaming centres to reopen on Monday 15th June. It seems Bookmakers will be allowed to reopen and this ruling only applies to arcades.

Yesterday evening an unconfirmed rumour was doing the rounds saying that AGC’s and High St Bingo were not going to be allowed to open on Monday, but LBO’s will. I have now had this confirmed by DCMS this morning that this is indeed the case. As we know the DCMS have been pushing Number 10 to have AGCs included and this week has been no different. But the conclusion reached by the No10 Team was that ‘Arcades’ would not be able to comply with the Gov Guidelines for retail that says customers should enter a premises, make their purchase and leave asap. (Number 10 have to pass new legislation that ‘allows’ particular businesses to be exempt from the closedown legislation passed in March) The view is that arcade customers need dwell time to partake in the product, which is at odds with the guidelines. The DCMS are adamant that there is no way to change Number 10’s position on this so we are now looking at July 4th as the earliest opening date for AGCs and High St Bingo. We did think that this problem was caused by the confusion over the interpretation of the word ‘Arcade’, but this is clearly not the case here. LBO’s will be able to reopen on Monday as planned.

Whatever problems bookies may have it wont be social distancing unless they have to have more than 10 metres between customers. Before the lockdown I went in a bookies (only for a pee), the only thing missing was the tumbleweed.
Wasnt so long ago that it was standing room only, markers and the blower. You could hardly see the board
for smoke.

had a update there will be meeting this afternoon with dcms to decide things might change but they might take bookies off the list if they dont open agcs

But the legislation to allow any business to reopen on money has not been passed yet so everything could change

Ridiculous. By that rationale the average betting customer comes in, places a bet and leaves? Christ, if you needed reassuring this government was 'socially distanced' from understanding the average Joe, there's all the proof you need. Most of the old boys that frequent the places don't leave all day apart for a smoke outside. With 'spoons still closed, they will be there longer still.

You're right it sholdnt make any difference. You could have 10 people in all day who havent got COVID, then the bloke who comes in for 2 mins and places a football coupon gives it to everyone in the shop.

As long as the measures are in place, it shouldnt matter for toffee.

Thanks for the information on this. It’s a very strange situation. They’ll just have to re-focus on the 4th July target.

Horrendous nanny state.

The bookies must be rubbing their hands. They have the only land based slots in the country that are actually operational, and hordes of players with too much time on their hands, money saved up in lockdown and not had a physical punt for nearly 3 months.

They will be as rammed as the guidelines allow.. wouldn't be surprised to see queues for the FOBTs!

If this is acceptable as social distancing, those who lobby for the betting shops should be now working on behalf of the pubs so we can all go out and get a well earned session!:D
