When it comes to casino games, some titles have become so popular that they often overshadow their actual performance or value. Take Bonanza for instance and its popularity here on Casinomeister.

For instance the thread concerning Bonanza that was started by @dunover back in November 2016, is going to be 10 years old later this year and has generated over 2 MILLION Views and has over 24,000 responses. That is just mental IMO. Have to say why??!

I just cannot understand its popularity or cult following.

So is it just me that feels this way about Bonanza, or are there any games that you feel the same as I do about Bonanza?

Bonanza is nearly 10 years old and was a very original and refreshing concept at the time. BGT clearly put a lot of work and thought into the Megaways brand and this slot probably went through multiple design iterations as well as maths tweaks over several months to get it right. Not many slots have a bonus hit-rate of 1/480 and get away with it, but BTG know what they're doing. It was and still is a fantastic game - there's no denying that - produced by what must be an incredibly knowledgeable and talented group of game designers. Lots of studios focus on interesting new ideas for the bonus. BGT thought they could do better, and ripped up the base game as well. The result speaks for itself and they deserve all the success they've had with it. They've licensed the Megaways mechanic out to other studios but none of them have come close to Bonanza with their offerings. 10 years later and the game still has longevity, therefore I don't think it's over-rated.

If you want over-rated slots, look no further than the Big Bass series of slop games that have infested the industry over the last few years. Low-effort pish from parasitic chancers who let other studios do the hard work so they don't have to.

I play mostly for 'fun' so my criteria for a slot is probably different to someone who is more of a pure gambler on them.

It might boil down to whether a slot has given 'big' wins so I can understand the bonanza hate as no one has hit anywhere near the 26,000x max in 10 years!

I really like bonanza now but I don't play it to bonus, if it lands it lands. The base game is amazing because the megaways actually works and it will drop in decent to big wins just in the base.

Having played it a lot over 4 months I like everything about the design. Could even be that everyone wants to conquer the unconquerable slot and bonanza definitely seems to be that.

I find a lot of those 'ball in the bag' type slots with the giant grids overrated, they just never engaged me as much as slots that are 'reel' based.

The fishing slots I would agree are overrated but they are really popular so it could be most of us on here are slot snobs

One of the best things about slots is the variety which means that everyone will love/hate different slots and that makes it very subjective.

It amuses me a lot when I look at the screenshots or other threads and think why would you play that then remember people like different things and I've been asked about the 'crap' slots I like to play so much!

Was bonanza the very first megaways game? maybe that is a factor i remember the hype and even played it myself (unbelievable thinking about it now) these days it also has about a 1000 clones.

i dont under stand the big bass hype, 30+ odd games now which are all effectively the same and all boring trash to play.

Internet search says Dragon Born was the first Megaways.

I wouldn't say Bonanza is overrated.

The fact it stands up as a slot 10 years later still speaks volumes to just how well made it was at the time.

The Big Bass serious are easily the most overrated. Somehow so popular they've had who even knows how many reskins at this point. Bonuses always feel stupidly scripted and base game is very boring.

It’s baffling to me how Fishing Frenzy seems to always be near the top of popular slots in UK casinos, pays like shit, looks like shit, and boring as hell.
I don't get this either. Maybe it has to do with nostalgia?

It certainly does seem that innovation has gone down the toilet somewhat over the past few years when it comes to new online slot game releases.

There are however, some studios still trying to carve out their own niche. I would put 4ThePlayer in this area.
I think Shady Lady's productions have been solid. Croco gaming are doing interesting stuff as well.

Unfortunately I don't have a great answer to the original question. Perhaps Starburst :)

I dont think it helps that it's sat in the most popular games. This section tends to be at the top of the list of games on casinos, so rather than scrolling through, players just select the popular ones. Then it stays popular as everyone is playing it.
Right, that makes sense. A dark spiral ;)

I've kind of turned on Dead or Alive given how many games have features like wild reels and sticky wilds etc and they never updated the game with better sounds/settings etc.

Definitely Crazy Time. Everyone gets so hyped about the massive multipliers you see on YouTube, but playing it normally just slowly drains your balance with dead spins.

For me, it’s not even that Bonanza is overrated, it’s just that people treat it like the untouchable king of slots 😂 There are plenty of newer games now with similar mechanics that honestly feel smoother or more entertaining to play.

Great topic! Bonanza is definitely one of those games that divides opinions. Personally, I think its popularity comes down to the mechanics, the cascading wins and max win potential keep players coming back. That said, I do feel there are many underrated slots out there that offer better value and entertainment. Would love to hear what games others think deserve more attention!

Not sure about untouchable king of slots, seems like most people think it's the undisputed clown of slots!

Which slots would you say are similar? I'm interested to know so I can maybe give them a try if they have as good a base game as bonanza.
