I was playing Video Poker. Was dealt a Queen (not Diamond), Queen (not Diamond) , a King of Diamonds, a Jack of Diamonds and some random card I cannot remember. It seemed (and still does) obvious NOT to hold the King and the Jack- 3 more cards is a tall order and I already have my money back by taking the Queens- after all, I might get 4 of a kind.

Yep- you guessed it.

Up came 10, Ace and Queen of Diamonds.

I was gutted....and I really could have done with the money!

Two questions- was my choice logical and would you have done the same?; Would have those 3 cards come up had I gone for the Royal- or does the technology not work like that?

What sad but true stories do any of you have?

If you only ever played for the royal flush you would go broke very quickly. In my opinion you did right by holding what was your money back + the chance of something higher (3 of a kind, 4 of a kind etc) Its annoying when that kind of thing happens but as you said the odds are not good of that sort of thing happening from holding 2 out of the 5. Trust you to be the oddity :p but been there done that bought the t shirt lol

i am not a poker expert (as is widely known :D), but i think:
a) your choice was correct
b) yes, the next three cards would have been yours, regardless what you decided to hold and on which place.

bad beat!

This might make you feel a little better but until recently Video Poker machines in B+M casino's play double-dealt which means that all 10 cards are dealt at once. The cards you are dealt on the draw are dependant on what deal cards you throw away as if they were underneath your original cards.

You never know - the software may be using this style emulation!

Better still, it's highly likely that the software works like newer B+M machines - randomly shuffling the cards thousands of times per second until you press the draw button. since your time taken to deal would have been different if you held different cards it's monumentally likely that you would not have got the royal.

That is very interesting. If true, that means one will never know they made an error. That is a good feeling.

Any gaming technology people here know how it works for sure?

It's absolutely true in relation to the majority of Video Poker machines in land-based casinos. In fact, a google for "Video Poker" will give you many sites that explain how they work.

To be honest, I would bet that the on-line software works in the same way as the newer VP machines - the draw cards would never be chosen until you physically pressed the button. Why? Because imagine if the drawn cards were chosen before you pressed deal on the casino server, this would open a huge security loophole. Imagine the positive edge you would have if you knew the draw cards!!

This has happened to me also...i've played probably millions of hands and I alway hold the winner. But it has happened to me twice and both times I just sat there a couple of minutes with my mouth opened scratching my head wondering the same thing. I figure with all the hands I would have lost by throwing away a pair and trying to go for the royal i'm still ahead.

If you threw away your two queens and two more came out? That might have hurt more because then you would have known you did the wrong thing.

Keeping the suited KJ has an EV of .58
Keeping the high pair has an EV of 1.53

It's not even close.

I had a sad story last night. I was playing blackjack very aggressively with a bonus, but I was beginning to run out of chips. I'm dealt an 18 and the dealer has a 7. Not only is this an obvious "stand" situation, but I think I have a slight advantage. But I slip and hit the wrong button, draw another card, bust, and lose the hand. Then lose the rest of my deposit within a minute.

That's just plain dumb.

We've all done that ER, all regular Blackjack players I think.

Then subsequently following the bust, wanted to put hand and fist through the screen.

I've even done it and pulled a small card to 20 and 21. I laughed, :) but I was sure relieved.

LOL!:D

I have often wanted to smack my screen but a liitle voice says to me ''hang on, that is your computer monitor you are about to hammer''. At least in a land based casino, one can feel free to let go of one's frustration (within reason of course).:p
