My dad got a laptop for xmas, he has a dell desk top and now my brother sent him an XPSM1530.

When I got mine I never switched all my info from my desk top to my laptop but my dad does and hes asking me how. He lives in another state so I always help him with this stuff over the phone.

1. Is this something I can guide him through over the phone? Is it worth it? My dad gets impatient (more like frustrated) fast lol

2.My other ? is , when I set up my email , since I was going (and so is he) from XP to vista , I had to change something to the properties or something. I cant remember but I do remember it taking forever to use windows mail. I dont even use it anymore cause it was such a pain.

I have the inspiron 1521 so his pc is more up to date then mine, Im hoping I can still help him. Is there a huge difference in the standard set up or is vista just vista no matter what?

Thanks if you can help me help him, Im his "go to gal" and wanna do him right so he stays proud of his lil girl LMAO

It is possible to change the user interface on vista to make it look exactly the same as windows 98 or any other windows op sys... have a look in the controll panel for gui or appearence something like that... if u want ill have a look n write u step by step how to change it... but i kno u can make vista look and use exactly the same as other windows OS....

other than that u could try a software package that lets u controll the pc over the internet n sort it out like that for him... he would be able to wtch the pointer move on his screen as you are moving it on yours...

oh these silver surfers.... i have to do the same for my pops too... he's mac thank goodness... much much easier for these ere olde timers....

ooops looks like u wernt asking that... to move stuff over...

partition the hard drive on your new machine n then network them either over the internet or simply plug ethernet cable into each n make ya self a lan between them... then drag n drop files over... in to the shared folder... from there u can move them anywhere...

other than that you could just email everything he wants to a hotmail or gmail acc n then grab it from there onto the new pc....

good luck:thumbsup:

Yo babalon:

It sounds like a program like logmein.com would be helpful. It's free for the basic program. (and there are many other similar programs)

So long as he trusts you with his computer. Then as long as his computer is on and the program is running, you can easily access his machine remotely and fix most problems. I use it to help out one of the dinosaurs in my family.
