Having thumbed his nose at the will of the American people and our legal system, Obama is taking it up another notch. He is demanding that illegal immigrants detainees, half of which have criminal histories, should be treated like resort guests and afforded even more privileges and comforts. And he’s doing this while Americans are suffering through one of the worst recessions in our nation’s history, more than 15 million Americans are still out of work, unemployment rates hover around 10%, personal foreclosure rates and bankruptcies continue to rise, and the standard of living deteriorates for millions of households across the country.

Yeah, it would be so much better if they were packed together in tiny holding cells with bucket toilets...nothing keeps a person peaceful like being treated like shit while waiting for paperwork to go through before being deported. I totally disagree swampwitch. The detention centers should be as miserable as possible to deter them from wanting to get caught again and spend anymore time there. They are trespassers in the US and should be treated as criminals. What if they decided to move into your house without your permission swamp? I suppose that would be ok?? Breaking and entering is a crime. When someone breaks into your house witch and steals from you, I bet you will sure change your liberal tune. Now, where exactly did I say that I welcome an "invasion"? Of course illegal immigrants should be deported when found. Where did I say that all illegal immigrants are perfect people? Some of them are criminals. Not all, some. So yep, until a better system is in place, they need to go. But some of these people are stuck waiting to be deported for months. It hurts no one to give them little activities while they're waiting to go back. Putting them in some Abu Ghraib-like scenario is no more a deterrent than the death penalty stops people from murdering.

How about the recruiters that head south of the border in order to recruit for the packing plants? How about the owners and the CEOs of those packing plants? How about the owners of the big commercial farms? How about the factory owners? How about the construction company owners? How about the moneyed people who hire nannies and gardeners? These legal Americans, many of whom are self-described conservatives, who don't want to pay a fair wage to other legal Americans...are getting off scot-free. Don't they have culpability? If there weren't people hiring illegal immigrants, there wouldn't be so many illegal immigrants. If we're going to advocate harsh conditions in detainment for illegal immigrants, then isn't it only fair that their employers share those same harsh conditions, imprisoned, etc.?

I do agree that many americans are culpable in this as you say. I just don't think that coddling criminals does anything to stop the crime. You are right that american businesses need to be held responsible for helping perpetuate the problem. Perhaps you are not as far out there as your initial post seemed to indicate. I'm all for legal immigration, just not the sort of amnesty that those on the left tend to wish for illegal immigrants. Personally I believe we need to close our borders until such time as legal americans get their opportunities before allowing an influx of others. Here in California it is estimated that approx. $5000 per year is spent on each illegal (through medical services, education for their children, social programs, etc.). I respect everyones beliefs, politics or whatever, Swampy's as well, the only thing that i really disagree with is the use of "cheesy" comparing The VFW and The YMCA, both of these organizations provide great services, The VFW halls are not cheesy, they are full of Americans who put their lives on the line from wars past so that we may speak our minds freely, they also act as a burial detail for Military Funerals, "cheesy" VFW halls, that they are not.

Second The YMCA offers classes for children and adults, most have swimming and recreations centers available for hardly next to nothing, they teach important things like CPR and Swimming for disabled children and they help people, another not "cheesy" organization. They also help with single parent families during the summer that cant afford baby sitters.

I think all should be treated humane, thats what sets us apart from the rest of the blood thirsty animals out there, the Nick Berg beheaders that is.

These detainees should have no other basic rights than our own prisoners get that are behind bars for crimes. a warm meal, a place to sleep, grooming and medical attention, then they need to be on a plane or bus back to Mexico and come through the front door like everyone else that wants to be here and not sneak through the back door like a criminal, uninvited.

I tend to not look at a persons color or political preference when making an assumption. It is basically..what are you doing for us the people.

Right now we do not have any flood insurance in the middle of hurricane season because some republicans want to amend the bill to add 6000 more boarder patrol to keep illegals out. No new loans for people that need flood insurance.

There is no money available for USDA loans (rural) because of the same thing.

All those items would continue the process of building the US economy and it is stuck because of the boarder patrol wanted by some republicans.


I'm sure you'll find a way to claim Obama (democrat) for this also.

CORNYN OFFERS AMENDMENT TO ENSURE THE PRESIDENT STRENGTHENS BORDER SECURITY
May 25 2010

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) today spoke on the Senate floor and filed an amendment to the supplemental appropriations bill, which will help the President maintain his commitment to strengthening border security and provide resources desperately needed to secure the border. The amendment will not add to the deficit because the costs are fully offset by using unspent stimulus funds.

“Our children are living in fear, but the Obama White House is living in denial,” said Senator Cornyn. “The President must make border security a priority, not an afterthought or an empty talking point. I urge my colleagues to support this amendment and help send a message to our border communities that the federal government accepts its responsibility to keep them safe.”

In recent months, drug-related violence and other illegal activities along the Southwest border have escalated. Although President Obama called on his cabinet and all federal law enforcement agencies to ramp up their efforts to stop the illegal drug trade and weapons trafficking, he did not commit nearly enough resources to support his request. In his fiscal year 2011 budget request, President Obama cut funding to many of the law enforcement agencies tasked with combating drug violence and trafficking, and ensuring border security.

Senator Cornyn’s amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R. 4899) corrects the misplaced priorities of the Obama Administration, dedicating robust funding for border security and ensuring the President commits the necessary resources to the Southwest border. The amendment provides resources for federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who work on the frontlines of the U.S.-Mexico border every day. More specifically, Senator Cornyn’s amendment will fund six important priorities involving border security, which include border security and technology, state and local law enforcement, southwest border taskforces, border enforcement personnel, detention and removal activities, and ports of entry.

Each of these priorities are explained in detail below:

1. Border Security Equipment and Technology

* Provides $144 million for expanded unmanned aerial vehicle operations, including the purchase of six additional Predator B unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), ground control stations, and funding for UAV pilots and support staff
* Provides $49.4 million for 10 additional helicopters for border enforcement
* Provides $360 million for border surveillance and monitoring equipment, vehicles and mobile technology

2. State and Local Law Enforcement

* Provides $300 million for State and local law enforcement entities, operating within 100 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, to purchase equipment, hire personnel, including investigators and detectives, and cover salaries and expenses associated with border enforcement

3. Southwest Border Taskforces

* Provides $140 million in funding for High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Programs in Southwest border states
* Provides $44.7 million in funding for National Guard Counterdrug Programs in Southwest border states to support drug interdiction and anti-drug activities

4. Border Enforcement Personnel

* Provides Federal agencies (DEA, ATF, ICE and CBP) with over $340 million to hire and support criminal investigators, special agents, intelligence analysts, and other personnel for drug enforcement and illicit firearms trafficking

5. Detention and Removal Activities

* Increases detention capacity an additional 3,300 beds annually over a two-year period at a cost of $151 million
* Provides $125 million to hire 500 additional detention and removal officers
* Provides $89 million to expand repatriation programs that return illegal aliens to their home countries

6. Ports of Entry

* Provides $200 million to hire 500 CBP officers to staff southwest border ports of entry and for infrastructure improvements at high-volume ports of entry

And Hi swampwitch, I personally just want any president to uphold and enforce the laws already set in place on immigration and then the states wont feel the need to take their own drastic measures. I've been watching president after president fail to uphold and enforce these laws for 45 years in California! It was bound to bite someone in the ass someday regardless of which party is in. In my eyes, they are just as welcome as anyone but they need to do it in the correct legal manner, the same as I would expect to do it in any other country.

I'm with swampwitch also MissB in that we both realize it's a real big problem and changes need to be made. I do not believe anyone should be detained long enough to take dance lessons and I sure don't mind helping to pay for their bus trip home. Once.
I think it would behoove (sp?) all of us to hear from real immigrants who in the last 20 years or so have come here and done so thru legal channels. It could be very enlightening.
