Not sure I’m useless with tech. I think maybe some mass bot attack or spamming of there server. Maybe wrong however.

It's a distributed denial-of-service attack, where bots will flood the server with requests, causing it to overload and fail. Simple ones you just disallow access to the IP address range, but if its more intelligent by using third party computers by way of malware or viruses, or other methods of spoofing the IP, then it makes it a bit more difficult.
It seems strange its on a day when certain providers are all having problems too. Could be a mass attack on gambling sites, however, it must be a very specific attack to allow the site to work, just not the login section.

I dont know much about Ddos attacks but it reminds me of that situation where they flooded their switchboard and effectively shut it down until they called off their lawyers or something.
