How to install a shower?

Hey, strange request I'm sure I did try google but to no avail.

At my mom's house, she has only had a bath for a few years now. But now she wants a shower. How would I go about this, who to contact etc? And how much roughly would it cost?

Hi. Cheapest and easiest way is to change the faucet to one with an attached shower hose, and just mount the shower bracket on the wall.

I'm pretty sure they run about 80 - 150 bucks


You definitely want a hose, and it makes is so much easier to clean the tub.

Also, if she is ill, you can use a chair and still clean up nicely.

Also, don't forget that you may need to tile the walls if they are not tiled. My bathroom has a linen closet that opens onto the hallway, and I can access the plumbing from inside that.

You could have a plumber or bathroom refitter company come in, and ask for some quotes, and ask a bunch of questions, then try some DIY (do it yourself) searches.

I have no idea on the costs to do a shower, but I can guarantee that you can save a bunch of money if you go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the materials yourself, then hire a plumber/contractor to actually put it in for you. Most of the time if the contractor has to buy the materials, they're going to mark up the price. I'm not sure what they cost to deliver the materials, but I know for a fact that you can rent a flatbed truck from Home Depot for around $25 for 4 hours, which includes mileage.

If you're just converting a bath to a shower, you should be able to get off pretty cheap, seeing as how the pipes are already there. As Jasmine mentioned, you should be able to get by with just getting the shower walls...But, if you want to replace the tub for any reason, you can get both as a kit.

call a plumbing contractor in your area, infact call atleast 3 and have them give you a written estimate but not to exceed price, the usual mark up on material is 15% to 30 %, you might ask the contractor to let you buy the material but in the long run its better to let the plumber take care of everything, make sure if you go this route to get a general liability certificate and workers comp certificate in case of any damages or someone should get hurt, make sure that they give you a written warranty, thats usually a year but longer on the tub/ shower itself as most of the name brands(delta, ect) carry their own warranty......hope this helps some................laurie
