Well this is out of sheer frustration i'm hoping one of you guys is a car expert which i clearly am not

My bmw while driving turns off, but give it 5-20 mins it will start again for sometimes couple of days runs without a problem. Now when it went off 2nd time i called in RAC, when they attended the vehicle started as beautifully as it has ever done, plugged the computer and no errors or faults. Advised to drive normally as their are no problems. 3 days after again same problem, again rang them the guy came out and car worked perfectly. This time though the car recorded a unknown error code 2A6C after a bit of digging he told me it was to do with valvetronic.

Got the car to the garage and the mechanic couldn't find any problems but when he left the car running, the problem appeared after 2hr long wait. He changed the Valvetronic motor at a cost of 400 quid including parts and labout. But this problem persists.

The warning it shows when goes off shouldn't cut the engine off so it seems to be an electrical problem but no one can find whats causing this problem as all major electrical units are working fine.

The car was serviced 4 days before these problems started so RAC advised me to just try and change the engine oil as it might have been low grade affecting the performance. I got the oil fully drained and put in the BMW recommended one which again cost me quite a few quid.

Sadly, cars at the garage so can't take a picture of the warning light it shows whn goes off but i have found it on google and will add a picture

I can't risk driving it as it cuts electric power while driving which locks the steering

Just to add in the end, fuel pump has been checked and cleared, the dsc unit including all the sensors ABS etc as that wouldn't make the engine seize, solenoids checked and cleared, immobiliser checked and cleared. So you see my dilemma and the amount of labour costs

So guys any help is appreciated

Thanks and apologize if its in the wrong place

Not sure if this shall help as my problem was on a golf , which was a relay switch costing approx £170 quid , sometimes i would stall at a junction & then it would not start suffered with weeks & weeks moths & months , until i came across a guy who thought he new what it was , the guy changed a relay which was faulty , although it had been tested several times by different people the car did not show any fault , once this had been done . after thinking it was immobiliser * being told this lots of times , the car ran great & problem was sorted ) hope they haven't ruled those out )

might not like my advice but i say sell it and never buy BMW again :)
i use to own one and hated it, not only awful to drive but also if something was wrong
took ages to figure out what it was, and then it was expensive as hell.

Oh dear! I have E90 Petrol 3 Series too and had the same alarm. It's basically likely to be the Hydro Pump, a notorious issue on these models and costs 1800 quid just for the part. It's a safety system that controls the ABS/DSC (Dynamic stability control) and has numerous pipes with hydraulic fluid going in and out of it. Check this by pressing your DSC button on the centre upper dash, if it doesn't light up or lights up with a warning then bad news. Luckily when mine went, due to the 10-day delay in getting it over from Germany I got a complimentary on it. It is full of electronic sensors and when going wrong may put the car in disabled or limp mode depending on your set-up.

This part was replaced in thousands of cars a few years back after owners complained and it was featured on BBC's Watchdog consumer programme. BMW reluctantly agreed 2-4 years on a brand new car for a 1.8k part was not of sufficient standard. There is though (if it IS the issue) a firm in the UK that can strip it and redo the sensors for £200-ish. Your coil pack is likely a Siemens piece of crap too, and will need replacing eventually with a Bosch one.

I agree with matey above, the latter-day BMW models and especially the E90's really are pieces of shit, and I've driven BMW's for 80% of my driving life. There's always alarms for this and that, and even only doing 2-4k miles a year in mine, every bastard year there's a new advisory on the MOT or something worn out.

thanks everyone

thanks every one

@Dunover its not DSC unit or DTS thankfully, they are going to do some more checks tomorrow

That relay switch might be the one though, i'll ask them to have a look at that if they haven't done already.

Also i'm going to get rid of this after getting it sorted, already paid a deposit for an Audi Q3

You know I also have a 2008 corsa which i got 3 years ago for 15% the price of the BMW and it still runs like a dream, only problem that ever gave is the heating which costed me around 50 quid to fix

My brother works for BMW , without giving him much he said, fuel pump, DME.. must be digital motor electronics unit?? Crankshaft sensor, those are common but he just thrown random things that cause engine to do shut down or not start. Also mentioned a dde main relay.
