To be honest I've never seen anywhere online you could play chess for real money

I don't think there are many options for real-money online chess, and the few options available seem to be very low-stakes and not a lot of players.
You could try the following site which seems to be the most popular, though I haven't tried it so it's not a personal recommendation:
