Gambling firms (inc 32Red & Betfair) used database of 28 million children to boost customer base according to press reports

UK betting companies have gained access to a database containing information on roughly 28m children in a huge breach of sensitive government data.

The firms have used the trove of data, which contains names, ages and addresses of children aged 14 and above in schools and colleges across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, to boost the number of young people gambling online.

Not sure how much truth there is in this, but shocking if any firm actually used the data to target children turning 18 or something.

GBG are widely used for age verification so what I read is that they have used the info they got access to to enrich their database.

I don’t see anywhere in the article that gambling companies has used this to boost the numbers of young people to gamble online. That info is probably just to stir up emotions towards the gambling industry and used as click bait (aka Fake News)

Saw something about it on the news this morning.

Was not paying much attention but from what i heard they were not happy about their childrens data been shared.

But the data list was available widely to all sorts of companies including gambling firms. But there was nothing to say any gambling firm was using it to target children into gambling.

And as has already been pointed out there is not 28 million children in UK. It is yet another scare story about gambling .

This is complete nonsense and I’m shocked any “newspaper” can print this stuff without asking for comment from those Companies named. We have used GBG for years to ensure our customers are over 18 - I don’t exactly understand their relationship with this particular database but I can only assume it’s used as a negative match rather than “for targeting underage players”.

Our advertising focuses on older players and as a result we have evidence to prove that registrations in 2019 of those between 18-24 have dropped from 2018.

The way gambling companies has ”used” this info to increase young people gambling is that the age verification tool used, provided by GBG, has become more accurate so people above 18, that previously has been denied to gamble due to lack of correct info in the verification system, now have been able to approve.

I thought it was a sunday times investigation, although not a favourite paper of mine, I think that would give it a bit more credibility. I'm assuming the 28 million must relate to a total over several years as that figure doesn't make any sense for a single year. Unfortunately the article is behind a paywall.

Thanks for that link, reading between the lines, and guessing a bit, once children in the uk become adults (18) this information wouldn't yet be available on the electoral role and credit score agencies, there would be a time lag, and so the automatic verification systems the casinos use would reject the young person (age 18) from signing up as the age test couldn't be satisfied, manual verification would be required. But this extra data from this database would enable the age tests to be completed. So, it is a bit cynical if this is what has happened...

I also find the comments in particular on many of the articles truly disturbing. It is as if some of these people live in an alternate universe, with alternate facts. Or even when presented with the facts, they simply do not seem to be able to understand/comprehend. Really, really worrying when sometimes there are over 10K likes for a particularly derogatory, uninformed, nasty misogynistic comment.

BUT... the DM does have some great animal articles - admittedly pinched from Bored Panda or Reddit.

But back to the article in question. The headline implies these kids are being targeted by gambling sites, but that does not appear to be accurate. It is the actual verification process that will be simplified as the database in question provides "a fast and cost effective way of verifying the ages of young online customers claiming to be 18 or over."

Among the comments threatening death and destruction to the gambling industry, there appears to be at least one voice of reason which I agree with: "I must of read that wrong as I read the gambling companies used the data to confirm that the children were under 18 when those children tried to pretend they were over 18 and thus then refuse them access? If that is the case surely that's a good thing??
