Hi,

My regular desk top pc took a dump this morning. Have plans to take it in to a shop. They are really good and almost all repairs are $100.00, no more. Some places charge that much just for diagnostics.

Anyway, I am using a newer hp with windows 8.

We normally have TrendMicro Platinum protection on our computers, but they

limit it to 3 devices.

So, I am interested in finding a good, free program I can use on this pc until I get

mine back

I know, I know....... this subject has been covered already......... I just can't find it!

Suggestions?

AVG antivirus, and o....m...g... $100 per repair? i HOPE that includes parts, if not, wow, You realise most places especially in the states charge you that money to run an AV? If the problem is bad, pm me, im not saying im bill gates but i fix/build comps as a hobby, and it wont cost you anything!

I would recommend Avast, very fast and memory light program. However, since I upgraded to Windows 8, I haven't felt the need for any third party anti-virus software on my computer. Windows Defender seems to take care of all the problems... so far.

The best free Anti-Virus protection is YOU. Learning to browse the internet safely is the best way to prevent viruses to begin with.

If you think about it; Microsoft are a multi billion dollar company with decades of experience yet people still feel the need to pass over securing their computer to a lesser known company that offers "free" protection. I would feel more insecure installing one of these protections than using none as you are giving them a lot of control over your computer.

I use AVG free edition and every year when it updates to the new edition I get a free 30 or 60 days for the full working version.
But when trial is over I downgrade back to free edition.
Besides that I use Malware Bytes and a Rootkit scanner.
Along with Windows Defender on my system I never ever run into infections on my computer and laptop.

Also as mentioned,as long as you know how to surf the web without going to dodgy websites and stuff you should be fine with basic security on your pc/laptop.
