"'New Law Cripples Internet Gambling' is the headline above the fold," said Jim Winkler, top executive of the agency, as he waved the newspaper's Oct. 14 edition from the podium during the board's meeting. "This reflects seven years of hard work by this board."
The Post article said the legislation eliminated "an activity enjoyed by as many as 23 million Americans who wagered an estimated $6 billion last year."
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act prohibits online gamblers from using credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers to place and settle bets. The board worked in a coalition with a variety of Christian and family groups and other organizations, including the National Football League, National Collegiate Athletic Association, National Basketball Association, National Council of Churches and Concerned Women for America.
"It was really a remarkable coalition across ideological and theological divides, and between organizations and churches concerned about justice and between major sporting enterprises that are concerned about the impact of gambling on the integrity of their sports," Winkler said.
The Rev. Cynthia Abrams, a board staff member, played a key role behind the scenes in working on the legislation, Winkler said. A turning point came during an Iowa field hearing in which United Methodist Bishop Gregory Palmer testified in support of the legislation. U.S. Rep. James Leach, R-La., and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., were at the hearing. Afterward, Frist threw his support behind the legislation.
"Congressman Jim Leach on the floor of the House of Representatives personally and publicly thanked Cynthia Abrams and the United Methodist Church for the key role she and we played in getting this passed," Winkler said.
Both Winkler and Abrams said the passage of this legislation will especially protect children and young adults.
"It is very hard to regulate who has access to Internet gambling sites," Winkler said. "Poker is just exploding in popularity as well as other kinds of betting and sports betting. Millions of people get sucked into addictive behavior."
"We have been historically opposed to gambling in all its forms," Abrams said. "We have to be very careful to protect our children and young people from future addiction."

Celebrate they might but they may have preferred it slip through without front page headlines on the Post and NY Times (a friend outside the industry from the US phoned me up to tell me it was big news). This will probably work in the industry's favour.

I could say a lot of things in response to these "die-hard" religious groups, but I will refrain because they may be misconstrued...but basically, "why not just break out the chastity belts while you're at it??" People will still find a way to do what they want to do...even if they want to bet on a pool at work or otherwise ON FOOTBALL, other sports, etc. Whatever, man...

Yeah I feel the same way, but to be fair, it's the politicians who should take the blame and [they] do tend to be using the religious groups as a bit of a decoy from the real issues IMO. The fact Frist is bankrolled by Harrahs is good enough to show the *real* reasons for the recent legislation.

I agree, Simmo! ... when it gets right down to it. I hate to say that there is so much propaganda with some (not all) U.S. politicians and our media in trying to capture public opinion by using *pawns* in any and all attempt to achieve their ultimate goal. Emphasizing worst case scenarios as though it is common everyday practice in this industry and presenting it in a way "we are only looking out for you ..." to gain public support/votes. But, unfortunately, that is nothing new ... its just a shame that the citizens who are vulnerable to this just don't see it by now.
The hypocrisy of this attack on online gambling is truly staggering.
I've just been reading an article on land gambling in the USA where the federal agency responsible for supervising Indian land casinos has just lost a Court case in which it claimed the right to control Class III games in Indian casinos.
The article mentioned that scattered throughout the United States there were 400 Indian land casinos, owned by 220-something tribes in 28 different States.
The business is worth around $22 billion.
And they're trying to kill off online gambling on moral grounds?

For one, there should never have even been an issue in which ANY Federal agency attempts to control any part of an Indian Casino which is on THEIR RESERVATION. (giveth BACK what was taken away just to slowly take away again??) Sorry I am a bit opinionated today.
Secondly, the "moral grounds" issue... if one is to use points/issues to attempt to support their grounds or legislation, then AT LEAST be consistent in doing so, or demonstrate why it is OK in one sector but not this particular one that they are trying to put a stop to.
Let's not forget about bingo halls and money wheels, which, I believe...result in monetary winnings. And, oh my, some are still held in churches...

Oh great....Now its not only Congress that has to be fought...Now Its Indian Gaming thats going to stomp out Online Gaming...a 22 billion bank roll is going to be hard to buck...The Democrats, if they get to occupy the majority of seats in Congress are going to get greased...Another battle to fight....

One of the largest online poker sites calls it a day in America
The Ongame owned and powered Poker Room.com site is to close its virtual doors to American players with effect from November 6 according to an announcement this week. Industry observers have been expecting the announcement as Ongame was acquired earlier this year by Austrian public company Bwin, which has already announced its withdrawal from the US market.
In a company statement, Poker Room says that in response to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act, it has decided to stop accepting new US player accounts on October 25, and on November 6, it will no longer accept bets from current US customers.
"We regret that the U.S. has taken this step to make it virtually impossible to offer real money entertainment to U.S. customers. It is doubtful that the U.S. authorities will achieve their stated goals by introducing such legislation. We believe that a properly monitored forward-looking regulation would be much more effective than this general ban," the statement comments.
"Entirely due to this new law, we are disappointed to announce the following restrictions for all customers within the U.S.:
"Depositing Restrictions
We have been working on a technical solution to restrict all customers within the U.S. from depositing new funds at PokerRoom.com. This solution will be implemented on October 25th.
"Real Money Restrictions
We will have implemented the technical solution to restrict all customers within the U.S. from accessing our real money games starting Monday, November 6th. After that time you will still be able to login to PokerRoom.com, enjoy all of our play money games and withdraw funds from your account at your convenience.
"Cash-Outs
Your funds will continue to be safe, secure and yours, and will be transferred to you at your request. The option to cash-out will remain available to you.
"Unused Tournament Tickets
Valid tournament tickets are as good as cash and will be refunded to your account once the U.S. restrictions are implemented on November 6th. It may take some days for all tickets to be processed into cash, and only valid tickets (not expired) at the time of the U.S. restriction will be refunded.

I noticed on the Meisters Accredited Casinos List that he says Geisha Lounge no longer accepts US players but I still play there and they have even been sending me those 150% bonus offers that I took up one this weekend.......could it be that they still accept me because I moved to Esconditoville, in the Arctic Circle ?

Yes, your move lets you play online casinos. It doesn't matter if you are a US citizen but rather where you are residing at. Even though Casinomeister himself is a US citizen, he lives in Germany and can play whatever casino he wishes.

I not only "wished" they would close it... I DID have them close it..permenantly, and without remorse. Just as I have done with every RTG and Playtech. I consider my online play over if I can't play the software of my choice... which is definitely not either of these two. By the way, I'm in New York.. one of the 11 evil states that even the Devil himself dare not set foot in. Edit: Except for that Devil Hillary Clinton.

Tim, are you a blackjack player?
I've been running stats for the last two weeks at Bodog and am astonished at the crooked play of the RTG software. I've had several sessions (40-100 hands per) at 70% dealer wins, with a blackjack ratio of 5-3 in favor of the house. I'm absolutely stunned. I knew casino software was rigged, but Jesus Christ!
I also pulled out my money after this weekend and will not be back. And I'm loathe to try any other RTGs after this one.

Just wanted to add.. Global Player is not taking U.S. players any longer. I was able to sign in, and recently made a deposit (before the official announcement), but for some reason had to check their website today and saw the message about U.S. players. I sent an email to confirm and got this response:

A little confusing since some of their casinos are combining (looks like there won't be a new RTG for Diamond Deal or Twin Aces) as they are joining a couple of the other sister casinos (Slots.com, Sun Palace, Vegas Casino Online, Las Vegas USA, and Festive Bingo will remain, converting to RTG), but their live support is prompt and informative (I had a slew of questions for them). The agent did state that some things may not be fully active yet, but looks like it will be complete by end of day (he said within 5 hrs or so)
