Casinos figured out they could sell you a digital poster instead of chips. Regulators haven't caught up yet.

California and New York banned the dual-currency sweepstakes model earlier this year. As most of the operators withdrew. There are few that went the other direction and built something new instead.

The idea: you're not buying casino currency, you're buying a pack of digital posters, or a mystery box of collectable cards, and the coins just happen to come with it. Spinsly launched this version on September 22. Twenty dollars gets you four themed digital posters and 40 coins. Play through them once and each coin is worth a dollar. The poster is technically the product, thus casino is incidental.

Card Crush does the same thing with collectable card battles. ZumbaCards sells mystery boxes with battle cards attached. None of them look like a sweepstakes casino on paper, which is exactly the point.

Brands behind it: Mamba- launched Amazon Jackpots Posters as a separate brand for California and New York specifically. Blazesof - built Card Crush. B2Services launched ZumbaCards. They're established operator groups running parallel product lines under different legal architectures for different states.

Card Crush has around 5.4 million visits in roughly three months of operating. ZumbaCards was growing 73% month over month in August.

.As of October, no regulator has named any of these platforms in a cease-and-desist or lawsuit.

Whether that distinction holds up when a regulator actually looks at it closely is still an open question.
