can I? with my hard drive?

Got a question for all those who can help. I want to take my hard drive out of an old e-machines computer and install it in a slightly older dell computer. Can this be done? or am I playing with fire?

I'm not sure, Dells used to use Maxtor HD, and I'm not sure if you can. Also, if you are able you will have to reformat that HD in the Dell. If you have information on it you want saved, set up a network and transfer the data on the hard drive to your current hard drive (if you plan on running dual drives). Or you can buy a flash drive to store any information so you don't lose it when you do a reformat. I hope I made sense...

Well I hooked the hard drive from the e-machines computer up to the Dell and booted the Dell and then the e-machines drive started beeping away!!! beeeepppppppp very annoying. I'm being told the hard drive might be shot :-(
