To be fair I'm not sure of the max multiplier of said fish, but it teases now and again landing in the base or the bonus without the fisherman.

Quite right that the base game for the most part is bad. If you go on a feature drought then that balance will drop quickly, however the 5OAK aren't that rare and pay quite well.
