Alberta Inches Closer to Regulated Online Gambling

By Natasa Milojevic, Last updated May 28, 2025

Everyone within Canadian borders (or people who keep tabs on what’s going on in the Maple Country) already knows Ontario was the first Canadian province to open up online gambling to private operators back in 2022

But as of this year, Alberta is well on its way to becoming the second Canadian province to go down this road

They’ve already advanced Bill 48 (also known as the iGaming Alberta Act) that’s going to initiate the establishment of iGaming Alberta — a new government agency that’ll essentially do the same thing as iGaming Ontariomake sure all licensed operators play by the book.

All in all, Alberta is definitely taking a page from Ontario’s playbook.

But everything’s still a work in progress since things are still murky in terms of how licensing procedures will look like, what responsible gaming protocols will be in place, etc.

Looking at the whole thing, nobody’s expecting Alberta to launch the market before the beginning of 2026. But slow and steady wins the race, right?
