Why Macau Has the World’s Largest Casino Resorts
There’s more than one reason why Macau has the world’s largest casino resorts.
It’s practically a little bit of everything — geography, legal grounds, and the fact that the entire gambling market was in the hands of one single man for half a century.
In fact, Macau’s the only place (technically) in China where gambling’s fully legal, and it’s positioned next to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, which equals an influx of hordes of players. That’s something no other place in the world can match.
Also, back in the day when Macau was still a Portuguese colony, Stanley Ho, a super powerful gambling tycoon, basically had the monopoly over the entire Macau gambling market. His company, Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau, was granted dominance, and he made sure to keep a tight hold on it for over 40 years.
That kept going until 1999, when Macau was handed back to China, and the gaming sector opened up to welcome companies like Las Vegas Sands, MGM, and Wynn. A couple of years later, we were all looking at one of the leading gambling hubs. It’s like Macau was trying to make up for everything it didn’t have for half a century. One thing after another, and the Macau government started earning more than 70% of its revenue solely from casinos.
Put it that way, and it’s clear as day why it was in everyone’s best interest to focus on opening up large casino resorts left and right in Macau.
What Makes a Casino One of the Biggest in the World
There’s more than one element that plays a part in a casino being named as one of the biggest in the world. But for the purpose of this blog post, we had to settle on one.
In this case, we focused solely on the gaming floor area in square meters. You already know what happens with too many chefs in the kitchen, and that was our reasoning in this case, too.
Based on that criterion, Winstar World Casino & Resort came out on top, and rightfully so. The place has 55,740 m² of gaming space.
And although we said nothing except the total size of the gaming floor, it would be unfair to ignore that Winstar hosts 10,000 individual slot machines. Checks out given the humongous size of the place.
What to Expect When Visiting a Mega-Casino Resort
Maybe it’s your first time visiting a mega-casino resort. Or you’re just one of those people who can’t lift a finger without getting ready in advance. That’s totally fine and we’d be the last ones to judge, so we give you a sneak peek of what awaits you at some of the biggest casinos in the world.
Colossal scale
While you won’t necessarily get lost in the largest casino in the world, you may not be aware of the sheer scale of some of these places until you get there. So make sure you pack those comfy sneakers, because there’s no way you won’t end up walking some ridiculous distances.
Hustle and bustle 24/7
Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Most of the top casinos in the world don’t ever shut their doors. Meaning, people are constantly on the go, lights never go dim, and the music never cuts out.
Most of these are more or less intentional, as some folks would probably pack their bags and leave if any of the facilities just closed for the night. But if you’re easily overwhelmed, you may want to think about booking a hotel outside of the mega-casino resort. This is just so you can catch a breather.
Endless luxury
Even though you may head over to one of the world’s biggest casinos just for the thrill of the slot machines, you can’t close your eyes to its lavishness. Think marble and gold everywhere, statement chandeliers, high-end shops, and fine dining places.
Top-tier service
Most people end up surprised by the way the staff goes above and beyond to accommodate them. It almost seems unnatural, your drink ends up in your hand within seconds, and facilities are always spotless. But the same as with everything else, this is intentional, too. The whole place is designed to give players a frictionless experience so they can focus on, well, feeding the machines.
Do the Biggest Casinos Offer Online Gambling Options
Some of the top casinos in the world offer online gambling options, but not all.
As you may have guessed by tapping through this blog post, Macau’s really big on brick-and-mortar casinos. So if you’re anywhere near Macau, don’t bank on gambling online.
If you’re located somewhere else, you may be able to access BetMGM, Caesars Palace or some other online casino, depending on your local gambling laws.
Choosing the Best Large Casino for Your Next Trip
We’re not the kind of people to tell you what to do. But if you plan on spinning the globe and just dropping a random pin, your chances of ending up at the place you’ll actually like seriously drop. So here’s how to make sure you’ll get your next gambling spot right.
Do serious research
Whatever the biggest casino you’re eyeing, someone’s stepped foot in there before. This means you’ll even be able to find walk-through videos that capture the full vibe of the most famous casinos.
While you’re watching, lock in on the whole atmosphere and the noise level. If it feels too charged, and you’re drawn towards something quieter, you definitely want to pass on Vegas casinos.
Think about what kind of gambler you are
While most of the world’s biggest casinos are practically self-contained cities that give you a full-blown experience, you’ll probably be going there for the game. Or a casino bonus or two.
But what kind of game do you have your mind on? Are you planning on taking small shots around the roulette table or going full send in the VIP rooms?
If you’re in for the high-end gambling, Wynn Palace, City of Dreams, or the Venetian Macau could match what you’re after. Otherwise, MGM Grand Las Vegas or Winstar could be more up your alley.
Look for micro-escapes
Constant clatter of chips, jingles, cheers, and groans would wear down a mountain, let alone a first-timer heading into the largest casino in the world. Micro-escapes like lounges or quiet cafes matter as much as their machines being tamper-proof. So look for the mega resorts with multiple zones, review their maps and photos, and skim their Google Maps reviews to find clues about crowd density.
Responsible Gambling
Gambling responsibly still applies, regardless of the venue you’re doing it at. Some would say responsible gambling matters even more when you’re half-blinded by the neon lights of the clattering casino floor.
That’s why it matters more than you think to gamble only (and nothing beyond that) what you can afford. In case your behavior seems to go out of hand, there’s rarely a valid reason to try to deal with it alone when you can talk to a professional.
