There’s more than one reason why Macau has the world’s largest casino resorts.

It’s practically a little bit of everything — geography, legal grounds, and the fact that the entire gambling market was in the hands of one single man for half a century.

In fact, Macau’s the only place (technically) in China where gambling’s fully legal, and it’s positioned next to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, which equals an influx of hordes of players. That’s something no other place in the world can match.

Also, back in the day when Macau was still a Portuguese colony, Stanley Ho, a super powerful gambling tycoon, basically had the monopoly over the entire Macau gambling market. His company, Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau, was granted dominance, and he made sure to keep a tight hold on it for over 40 years.

That kept going until 1999, when Macau was handed back to China, and the gaming sector opened up to welcome companies like Las Vegas Sands, MGM, and Wynn.
