Actuarial and compliance consultant in the job
Ireland's Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin, has announced the appointment of Liam Sloyan as Ireland's first Regulator of the National Lottery, effective November 17, 2014.
Sloyan joins the department from his current position as chief executive and registrar of the Health Insurance Authority where he has played a leading role in the development of the regulatory infrastructure of the Irish health insurance market.
Prior to joining the Health Insurance Authority, he worked as an actuarial and compliance consultant in the life insurance industry.
Sloyan will be tasked to ensure that the National Lottery is run with due propriety, that the interests of participants in the National Lottery are protected, and that the long term sustainability of the National Lottery is safeguarded.
There is some speculation that the appointment may eventually evolve into one that regulates the entire gaming industry.
Commenting on the appointment, Minister Howlin said, "I am confident that Mr. Sloyan's appointment, together with the award of the new National Lottery Licence to Premier Lotteries Ireland Limited, will ensure that the National Lottery continues to enjoy public support and to benefit many good causes in the years ahead."
