Rhode Island Governor Vetoes Casino Bill
Rhode Island's governor has vetoed a bill that would allow voters to authorize full-fledged casino gambling, giving Connecticut's casinos a temporary reprieve from new regional competition.
In conveying his veto late Tuesday, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri told legislators it is "unreasonable to ask Rhode Islanders to vote on these questions . . . when the impact on the state's finances and budget cannot be determined."
He would want the state's share of casino revenues and other financial details negotiated first, he said. Otherwise, the state would forefeit negotiating power, he said.
The bill would have asked Rhode Island voters to decide in November whether to allow table games at two existing slot machine venues — Twin River in Lincoln and Newport Grand in Newport.
